More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks – R.I.P. Big B's

Columns

I just realized that I forgot to mark the passing of Big B’s. For those of you who don’t know, Big B’s was the local new and used CD/DVD store here in Las Vegas.

I wasn’t a fan of the place for numerous reasons. Firstly, it paled in comparison to Baltimore’s The Sound Garden in every conceivable manner. But secondly, and more importantly, it sucked. The guy who ran the joint was a moron with barely any taste in music, much less knowledge about it. Every time I went there I got depressed.

So anyway, late last year I had to pick up some albums. I forget what they were, but I stopped by Big B’s, and it was closed. I cupped my hands and looked in the window. I could see that while the store was disarray, there was still merchandise on the shelves.

I looked a bit closer and I saw that the manager was there, so I knocked on the door.

Now, this is the same guy who confused Thom Yorke with Tom Waits, so he is a moron. I got his attention and he came over to the door. I asked what the deal was and he told me that the store was closed… forever. Apparently they’d had a bad month, during the busiest shopping time of the year, and the decision was made to shut the place down.

Again, in our previous encounters the guy had been a total d-bag, so there was no love loss. Still I felt kind of bad for the guy.

Wait, scratch that; I felt bad that what passed for an institution in Las Vegas had closed down. Big B’s might not have been great, but it was the best Vegas had to offer, for a time at least.

But now there’s a Zia’s a few blocks up and over, so things aren’t that bleak.

Still, rest in peace, Big B’s.
