The Wachowski Brothers (The Matrix franchise) are all set to bring the animated icon to life in a live-action version of Speed Racer. Joel Silver is producing.
Speed Racer is based on the sixties cartoon show where a young boy named Speed (who will be played by Emile Hirsch) races for glory in his souped-up Mach 5 race car which is full of tricks and gadgets.
John Goodman and Susan Sarandon are in negotiations to play Speed’s parents in the film. Goodman would play the part of Pops who builds racecars and is also an owner. Sarandon would play Speed’s mother who keeps the family together and focuses on their racing team.
There are still the parts of Speed’s girlfriend Trixie and his arch-nemesis Racer X yet to be cast.
The Wachowski Brothers are aiming for release in the summer of 2008.
