TV Babies: Gilmore Girls, Episode 7-21

Shows

First things last. As many of you already know, the CW announced that Season 7 will be the final season. The reasons, to me, are irrelevant. If Lauren Graham and Alexis Biedel are ready to move on, so be it. Right? Well, maybe I’ve been living in denial: informing anybody who’ll listen that I’m prepared for its departure. But picturing next fall’s landscape without Gilmore Girls (plus potentially minus V. Mars, Friday Night Lights and Scrubs) suddenly looks very bleak indeed…

Shifting focus to last night’s episode: my initial reaction was underwhelming. Upon further review, however – there was a cerain quietness about Unto the Breach that was very appropriate…

Major life changes don’t always happen with a loud bang. Most everyone had that final stupid, drunk pre-Graduation ceremony night. Yet once that’s over, there’s a somewhat sobering calm: so what’s next?

And that’s exactly the feeling last night captured. Even Richard & Emily’s graduation party for Rory seemed subdued: right down to their slightly cheesy and not especially clever “ode to Rory”. But you know what? This was not a time for them to steal the show, necessarily. It was simply to tell Rory how proud they were…

As far as stealing the show, though: poor Logan. Wow, I never thought I’d say that…at least without a lot of sarcasm behind it. But how can’t you feel for the guy? Is he being a little too impulsive, putting Rory on the spot like that? Probably. But getting nothing better than an exit-stage-left “maybe” at the Gilmore’s Senior party, followed by a flat-out “no” at the graduation ceremony. It’s strange to think that after all they’ve been through, it most likely ends with a whimper and Logan stomping off…

So while Rory and Paris gradaute, and look ahead to infinite possibilities – things are slightly simpler (if not complicated) for Lorelai. She’s pretty comfortable with work and the success of the Dragonfly Inn. She’s more than comfortable with Stars Hollow. She’s even getting along with her parents for the most part. Yet we all know what’s still missing. And with Rory innevitably moving on, you can just sense Lorelai’s awareness that things are going to be different. While she tries to chip her way back into Luke’s heart, it’s still a slow-go. There was the very sweet scene with Luke in Liz’s store shopping for Rory’s graduation gift, and you felt him letting his guard down just a bit. Overhearing Lorelai tell Babette and Miss Patty that her karaoke song “didn’t mean anything” put that guard right back in place.

We’ll just have and see what they have in store for us next Tuesday, as we say goodbye to Lorelai, Rory and all the wonderfully unique citizens of Stars Hollow. And if there’s one thing you can be ceratin of, it’s that Rory’s Stars Hollow graduation party won’t be so quiet…
