Update on NWA & TNA Title Situation

News

As reported last night by David Brashear, the National Wrestling Alliance has stripped Christian Cage of his NWA World Heavyweight Championship and Team 3-D of the NWA World Tag Team Championship. This comes as the NWA and TNA Wrestling sever all formal ties.

Here is the video report making this announcement, which states that NWA Executive Director Bob Trobich was getting inundated with calls from wrestlers challenging Cage, but the now former champ was ducking these challenges. The video also talks about NWA’s plans to hold a tournament to crown a new champion:

TNA referred to both titles as “NWA” World Championships at last night’s Sacrifice pay-per-view, although the “NWA” is of course no longer referenced on TNAWrestling.com in a report on Kurt Angle’s championship victory in the PPV’s main event:

History was made at Sunday’s “Sacrifice” as Kurt Angle claimed the World Heavyweight Title in the three-way bout against former champion Christian Cage and Sting. Cage tried all he could to stir the hatred between Angle and Sting, but in the end, it was Angle getting Sting to tap out to the Ankle Lock just as the icon was scoring the pin on Cage. As a result, Kurt Angle is the new World Heavyweight Champion! Tune in Thursday night on “iMPACT!” on SpikeTV for more news on this huge title change!

Meanwhile, Dave Meltzer at WrestlingObserver.com is reporting that the finish of the three-way will actually end up resulting in the title being held up in hour one of tonight’s iMPACT! tapings, with the new TNA champion being crownded in a King of the Mountain at Slammiversary.

We’ll have more on this as it is made available, and while NWA’s Web site is currently down, you can catch up on previous reporting on this news starting here. For a brief recap of the history of NWA and other promotions breaking off affiliations, click here.
