More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks – The Binge

My New Year’s Resolution seemed like a grand idea; listen to one neglected album, from years past, a week and give it it’s fair due. I mean it sounded great in February, when I’d purchased album the entire New Year.

But what I forgot to remember about myself was that I’m a feast/famine type of guy when it comes to music. That means that when I buy music, I probably get seven albums at a time. Sure it’ll be months between those purchases, but when they happen they tend to happen large.

As a result of my musical shopping this week I’m dreading having to listen to this week’s resolution pick (and I’m typing this on a late Thursday night, at least 36 hours after I was supposed to have gotten my first spin out of the way.) I mean, I’m not going to pretend that it’s not my fault. It’s just that going to the music store just isn’t as convenient as it once was.

Whereas I used to go to Hiphopsite.com and then scurry across the street to the barely tolerable Big B’s, now I have to go Zia’s which is one block up and two blocks over from Hiphopsite.com. And I’m talking long “West Coast” blocks. In Vegas May heat. I mean, I love music, but even I think that’s asking a bit much.

That said, I made just that trek this week and here’s what I picked up;

DJ Jazzy Jeff – The Return of the Magnificent
Sa Ra – The Hollywood Recordings
Psycho Les – Psycho Therapy the soundtrack
Talib Kweli & Madlib – Liberation
Redman – Red Gone Wild
J-Dilla – Ruff Draft
Elliot Smith – New Moon
Bjork – Volta

That’s ten discs of new music for me to enjoy and savor. Sure Elliot Smith and Redman aren’t going to require the most attentive ear to appreciate, but Bjork tends to release albums that need to be digested and I’m guessing that the same will be said about Sa Ra. I’m certainly going to savor Dilla’s latest posthumous release and Jeff’s latest is a follow up to an album that I still cherish. And even 50% of the Beatnuts is going to get me hyped with anticipation.

But first I need to decide if I want to listen to an album from Pudgee tha phat bastard or from the Jurassic 5. Joy.

I can so see why people break their New Year’s Resolution.
