More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks – To Roots, or not to Roots?

Columns

Well The Roots are coming back to Las Vegas next month and I really kind of want to see them. I mean I’ve been a fan of the band for 13 years and I own all of their albums. Plus I’ve seen them twice already (though a decade apart.)

But the problem is that between the time that I found out about the concert and the time that went to get tickets the less expensive floor seats sold out. Thus I’m faced with the conundrum; do I pay more than I would like to, to see a concert that I want, or do I miss the concert?

On one hand I’ve already seen The Roots twice. It’s not like it’d be a completely unique experience. I’ve seen the extended jams. I’ve seen the medleys. I’ve seen the chemistry up close and in person. I mean I wouldn’t be missing out on too much, right?

On the other hand I absolutely loved Game Theory. It was my favorite album of 2006. So seeing that material live and hearing how the freak it would be sick! Plus with The Roots there’s always a chance for a surprise guest. And wouldn’t that be the price of admission?

However the venue itself isn’t much of a place to see a concert. It’s small. It’s not intimate; House of Blues is intimate. The Joint is darn near cramped. I’m almost guaranteed to catch a contact. That’s a bad thing, right?

Still going to see The Roots in concert is a chance to meet like minded individuals and music fans. The Roots attract a pretty diverse audience. And I’m almost guaranteed to meet a hot Black chick, though she’ll probably be on the arm of a white guy. Doesn’t that make the concert more appealing?

But the only tickets available are for actual seats. Seats? At a Roots concert? What kind of lame sits at a concert, much less when seeing The Roots. (Ok, that’s not quite fair, when I went to see Dave Brubeck I stayed in my seat.) But still I’d be paying extra for an awful ticket. That doesn’t make any sense, does it?

So there you have it; I’m torn. I don’t know what I’m going to do, and I need your help. Please give me your input.
