Robert Rodriguez is moving from the throngs of horror with Grindhouse‘s Planet Terror and straight into the future with a remake of the 1968 film Barbarella.

Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (Casino Royale) are currently in collaboration with Rodriguez on the script for the film. Barbarella originally started as a French comic book written and illustrated by Jean-Claude Forest. In 1968, it was turned into a film starring Jane Fonda as a futuristic and highly sexual mercenary in a fight against evil.

Rodriguez said, “I love this iconic character and all that she represents, and I’m truly excited by the challenge of inviting a new audience into her universe.”

The film is currently looking at a release sometime in 2009.
