Kace’s Countdown – ECW On Sci Fi (5/29/2007)

Greetings, salutations and all that other stuff. I’m Kace, whom you may know from the Podcast here at Inside Pulse and the occassional Live coverage of TV events. This new column focuses on my personal picks for top moments from each show. Since ECW’s a 1 hour show, this will be a Top 5. Before I get started, some major thanks are in order.

First off, a big thank you to Mr. Michaels for letting me do this and also for letting me jump onboard the Inside Pulse wagon. Also a big thanks to Eric Szulzcewski, whose columns on Tuesdays are where I pretty much got my start, IWC wise as an email contributor for his Raw coverage. Eric S has always been fair to me and was a catalyst in me getting a shot at Pulse Wrestling. Just to make sure, I emailed Eric to get his blessing before I started this column. The blessing was granted, so here I am and here you are reading. Now then, let’s get this party started.

ECW On Sci Fi Top 5 Moments

Also Ran Moments & Notes

Extreme Expose performed to “Maneater” by Nelly Furtado and honestly, I didn’t think the song was that bad. The performance of Kelly Kelly, Layla El and Brooke left something to be desired, but they can’t all be winners.

There were some nice signs in the audience that referenced past ECW glory, including, “Where’s The TV Title,” which was last seen being dismissed by Rhino during ECW’s last Pay Per View and also a sign about the Dreamer Driver, which if I remember was a nice Reverse Brainbuster Tommy Dreamer did a few times.

As much as I hate not seeing Ariel around, I do find the idea of Kevin Thorn being the lone vintrue intriguing. Now I’m interested in seeing where they take him from here.

Notable by his absence this week is Gene Snitsky. Then again, it’s possible someone threw a fresh foot at him so it wasn’t his fault.

#5 – Randy Orton’s Postmatch Attack On Tommy Dreamer

I think Randy may have finally found a schtick that works for him. After sending Shawn Michaels into La La Land, then doing the same to Rob Van Dam during a match on WWE Raw the night before, Randy solidified his ability to clock people by doing so to Dreamer in a match that had a Diamond Dallas Page type of ending, as Randy hit the RKO Diamondcutter out of nowhere for the win. After that, came the teasing of a kick to the face, followed by the actual kick to the face. Maybe Randy should call that the Power Punt or something. Rob Van Dam, not medically cleared to compete on the show this evening shows up to aid his friend, only to get knocked down and out by Randy. I think what helps Randy here is his Bob Backlund like mesmerized expression once it’s become apparent that the opponent is hurt badly. All he has to do now is look at his hands and he’ll be set. It not only helps set up a nice storyline going into the Randy Orton Vs Rob Van Dam match at WWE One Night Stand this Sunday Night, but also adds an element of doubt to the 6-Man Tables match, as it concerns the team of Dreamer, CM Punk and the Sandman as they take on the New Breed 2.0.

#4 – The Elijah Elbow Express

I’m sure Elijah Burke will come up with a handy name for his corner elbowdrop, but for now that’s what I’ll call it. And it looked nice, too. During his match against CM Punk, Punk was slumped on his back in the corner. Burke charged towards the corner, jumped into a handspring on the top rope, then dropped down for a nice looking elbowdrop. If Rob Van Dam can have his Split Legged Moonsault, then I think Burke can definetly have this.

#3 – Muckna

One of the things I love about Matt Striker is his affinity for words. There was a time in my life where I was something of a dictionary freak, so anytime Matt talks it tends to perk my attention. While the Major Brothers were talking backstage about the situation involving Randy Orton, Matt intervened. It’s here where Matt references the word, “Muckna,” while addressing the Majors. Sensing confusion, Matt informed everyone of the meaning of the word (missing tusk). Afterwards, Matt articulated very nicely the reality of the upcoming tribranded WWE Draft, as it could cause tag teams, including the Major Brothers to split (though considering the Hardy Brothers, maybe it’s not THAT much of a reality). Brett & Brian however seemed unphased by this as they feel they’ve achieved their dream already, by competing in ECW. It was a nice way to showcase Matt’s, “Smarter Than You,” attitude while giving the audience a taste of what the Majors are like, personality wise and their generally positive attitudes.

#2 – Vince’s One Last Stand

It’s bad when the CEO of WWE can’t get the name of his Pay Per Views right, especially when it’s less than a week away. During his not-so-face to face chit chat with Bobby Lashley, ECW World Champion, Mr. McMahon looked to reference Custer’s Last Stand and in doing so, gave the wrong name of this Sunday’s One Night Stand show as, “One Last Stand,” instead. Had anyone else done this, Vince would have probably chastised that person without end. Kudos to Bobby Lashley for not correcting Vince and possibly risking a chastising of his own.

#1 – Pounce Through The Table

A good rule of thumb in a No Disqualification match is to make sure you do things you wouldn’t normally do since there are essentially no rules in the first place. In this case, that would be having a table set in the corner to destroy your opponent. If that doesn’t work out initially, bring in backup. Elijah Burke did just that in his hard hitting match against CM Punk, as the Alpha Male arrived on the scene to help out his New Breed 2.0 leader and teammate. Punk was able to fend off the former Monty Brown at first, but as he once again focused on his opponent, Punk suddenly found himself being hit with Alpha Male’s Pounce through the table, knocking him out and giving Burke the pinfall victory. The Burke Vs Punk rivalry has become my favorite among the WWE brands with great action between the two whenever they face off. The table was also a nice nod to the upcoming 6-Man Tables match that the New Breed 2.0 will be competing in against Punk and his teammates, Tommy Dreamer and the Sandman.

Thanks for reading and I’ll see you again this Weekend for WWE Friday Night SmackDown as well as the Kace Evers Podcast. Feedback welcome, so bring it on.
