Riding the Pine…MLB Draft Day 1

Today was the official Major League Baseball Draft held in Orlando, Florida. Thousands of players are looked at, and today picks will be made until 8:30 tonight. The first full round is completed (including supplemental picks).

To be eligible for the draft, a player must be a high school senior, college students that have completed at least their junior year (or be 21 years of age), or junior college athletes. All U.S. players, Canadian players, and players in U.S. territories (Puerto Rico) may be selected; all other players are signed as free agents. Any player not selected and does not attend college are considered free agents.

All players must be signed by August 15 – if they are not, they can go to/back to college; they can be drafted the next year if they meet the eligibility requirements. This is new this year, as in the past the team would have until the week before the next draft to sign their players. Also, a player cannot be selected by a team that has selected them in a past draft unless the player gives his consent.

Picks cannot be traded. They only way a team receives a draft pick is from free agency. Type A free agents get a teams first round pick (unless it’s one of the first 15 picks; then it’s a second round pick) and a supplemental first round pick. If a team already gave up their first round pick, they give up their second round pick. Type B free agents get a supplemental first round pick. Free agent types are determined by player rankings.
