The Pit Report: The Return of Mr. Hyde

Former UFC heavyweight champion Tim “The Maine-iac” Sylvia announced over the weekend on his website,, that he expects to return to the Octagon in October. That would put him on the UFC 77 card, which UFCJunkie is claiming will take place in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Sylvia had back surgery in May, just two months after losing the title to Randy Couture, to repair three bulging discs and a pinched sciatic nerve. Sylvia has been rehabbing his back ever since, and is now back to training again.

Tim Sylvia is going to have some major obstacles to overcome when he returns to action. First of all, when you’re 6′ 8″ and your walking-around weight is damn near 300 lbs., and need to have major surgery like that, you’re never going to be 100% again.

Of course all that is the least of his problems if you consider the recent incursion of major players in the heavyweight division. Tim may be a Miletich boy, but let’s face it, he’s no Matt Hughes. Sylvia has never been a remarkably good fighter, and it really showed when he fought Couture. Making a comeback after having surgery like this, and possibly facing the likes of Gonzaga, Cro Cop, Nogueira, or even Couture again, has got to have the former champ a little worried. If Fedor shows up, like some are speculating (and all of us are hoping), Sylvia’s hopes of reclaiming his title could be squashed for good.

Whatever happens, I’m looking forward to Sylvia’s return. Win, lose, or draw, I always got a kick out of the guy. It probably has something to do with my soft spot for big, overgrown goofs in wrestling (paging all Sid Vicious fans). Let’s just hope he can say his prayers, eat his vitamins, and stay away from the ‘roids this time. After all, Big Tim and steroids are a bad combo.
