The sequel to the 2004 film, The Punisher which starred Thomas Jane, is getting the go-ahead but it is being taken in a whole new direction.
Lexi Alexander (Hooligans) will direct the film and begins shooting in October. She is aiming for an R-rating, hoping to make things a bit more intense. Stepping into the role of Frank Castle/Punisher will be Ray Stevenson (Rome).
Nick Santora, Matt Holloway, Art Marcum, and Kurt Sutter have written the script and it is looking more like this will be a brand new start instead of a sequel. Lionsgate is trying for a new start to the franchise and this film is being call the third incarnation instead of a sequel.
There was the film with Jane, but Dolph Lundgren starred as the comic book hero back in 1989. The Punisher tells the story of a Marine who sees his entire family murdered before him. He survives and turns into a vigilante in order to avenge their death.
