More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks – Resolution: Week 23

This week we take a look at David Holmes’ Bow Down to the Exit Sign

I know exactly why I bought this album. I’d been a fan of Holmes’ scoring Steven Soderbergh flicks—the work he did on the soundtracks for Out of Sight and Ocean’s 11 completely blew me away. It like blew me away to where I had to cop the soundtracks immediately after leaving the theaters.

So I figured I’d finally track down one of his albums. Unfortunately it was with one of my bulk music purchases and I didn’t really connect with it immediately. Needless to say, it got pushed to the back.

However, having devoted a week to this album I can honestly say that I really do dig both it and Holmes as an artist. It’s really a dope album. How the tracks transition into each other and the random samples of conversation and dialogue really demand attention. I really thought it was going play as background music, but I got pretty caught up in it.

“Compared to What”, a funky groove featuring Carl Hancock Rux that just glides along and has some oddly topical lyrics for a song from 2000. “Bad Thing” is responsible for really piquing my interest in Jon Spencer.

The album ends on a high note with “Hey Lisa”, a song that sounds like the score to a scene where the star-crossed lovers reunite and live happily ever after.

Bow Down to the Exit Sign is one of the better revelations I’ve had doing this whole resolution.
