Murtzcellanious – LIVE COVERAGE – Rogers Cup Kicks Off

TORONTO – The main singles draw for the Rogers Cup women’s tennis tournament took place at Toronto’s Rexall Centre earlier this afternoon and with no real surprises, it would appear that world #1 Justine Henin has an easy road to the finals next Sunday.

After Martina Hingis, Amelie Mauresmo, and Venus Williams all withdrew from the tournament because of injury, Henin’s main competition will come from Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic (the Rogers Cup second seed).

Both players received byes into the second round of the tournament.

Other notable athletes playing in this year’s event include Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova and defending champion Ana Ivanovic both of whom could potentially face Henin and Jankovic in the semis.

Canadians hoping to see superstar Maria Sharapova also had their hopes dashed when the Russian advanced into the later stages of the East West Bank Classic in California, which would put a possible Canadian appearance in doubt.

Inside Pulse will be covering the event all week, so stay tuned for live updates.
