The Show

Showtime and HBO constantly battled it out in the last few years over programming and viewers. HBO has long been known as the “king of cable”. Showtime has slowly climbed up to equal footing with HBO, so it’s no surprise that Showtime created a show that is like HBO’s classic, Def Comedy Jam, but with a twist. That twist comes in the form of the comedians featured on Showtime’s Whiteboyz in the Hood.

Whiteboyz in the Hood takes a look at race and comedy. Many successful black comedians like Richard Pryor and Chris Rock have found success in developing material that speaks to both whites and blacks. This show decides to flip things and show all white comedians performing comedy, and doing it well, at urban comedy clubs across America. Now that’s a twist.

During each episode of this first season of the show, there are 3 white comedians featured performing standup in front of some tough crowds. It’s hosted by a black comedian named Talent (Heineken always in hand) with DJ Cassidy. Instead of just copying HBO’s formula and create a copycat version of Def Comedy Jam, Showtime went strictly original with this show. That’s a major positive for this show.

Comedy shows are made or broken on the comedians featured in the show, though. If you a fan of urban comedy, you may see a handful of people you recognize. But for the most part these guys are relatively new to television. It’s always a plus when you don’t hear the same jokes over and over again or see the same comics. The best performance on here could be many people, but Redbone is probably the best one. All of them hold their own, though, and they all prove themselves to the crowd.

White Boyz In The Hood takes you into the world of comedy without racial barriers. Like any comedy show, there are funny comedians, there are not so funny comedians, and then there are super hilarious funny comedians on this show. They are all unique too, eventhough they are all white. They are also not scared to step into a world that they are “supposed” to not enter. In the end, these comedians can transcend race and culture. Whiteboyz in the Hood proves that funny is funny, no matter where you live or where you come from.

This is a “highlight” episode, which includes brief clips from many standup performances as well as featured outtakes, behind-the-scenes, and on-the-street interviews. There is also a really funny performance from Dustin Diamond a.k.a. “Screech” from Saved by the Bell that wasn’t show on the rest of the show.

The Video:

The video is given in widescreen color with an aspect ratio of 1.78:1, which is enhanced for 16X9 TVs. Transfer is good with minimal distortion. It’s pretty standard quality for a TV show these days. No real problems at all.

The Audio:

The audio included is available in English Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo sound or English Dolby Digital 5.1 Stereo sound. There are subtitles available in English and Spanish. Again, it’s pretty standard quality for a TV show. The dialogue comes out crisp and clear.

The Extras:

Unaired Comedians
There are 3 comedians that didn’t make the final cut for the show. Here you get standup performances from Tom Simmons, Joe DeRosa, and Sauce. There is a reason why these guys didn’t make a cut. They are not that funny compared to the guys who made the final cut. They have some funny jokes, but they are too and far between. Still if you want to see more comedians they are here. Interesting note here, though. Sauce is the guy on the cover of the DVD that appears the largest, yet he didn’t make the final cut for the show.

Pilot Performances
This is where you can see the pilot performances of A.G. White and Ray Lipowski. This the same setting as the above unaired comedians. This is what they used to make the final cut of the show. Unlike the above, these guys are two of the better comedians on the show. They keep the jokes flowing. That’s why they made the cut and the three above didn’t. However, you will notice that you have heard some jokes before on the show.

“Honkey in the Hood” Music Video
Honest John wrote a song about himself. It was called “Honkey in the Hood”. That became the theme song for this show. Here is the entire song with various behind-the-scenes shots of the comedians on the show. It’s a funny song and it’s catchy. The video is equally as funny.

THE INSIDE PULSE

The white urban comedians on this show are just as funny as the black urban comedians featured on The Bad Boys of Comedy or Def Comedy Jam. This is an interesting concept for a comedy show and it worked. If you like urban comedy, definitely check this out no matter what race you are.

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
