Can two criminals from The Italian Job step into the shoes of one of the greatest cartoon/toy action heroes of all time?

Paramount Studios are supposedly working at full speed on a live-action film based on the cartoon and toys from the G.I. Joe series. Stephen Sommers (Van Helsing) has reportedly been offered the job of directing the film, and now he may have found his two leads.

Mark Wahlberg is apparently the first choice to play the role of Duke, one of the best known names from the franchise. And Jason Statham is the first choice in line to play the British character Action Man. Wahlberg has already been in talks with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura about the role of Duke. Statham has not had any talks yet, but he is believed to be the main actor they are seeking for Action Man.

Not much is known about the film itself in terms of other actors, filming start dates, or the plot. There are two scripts written though and pieces of each will be used for the final draft. Skip Woods (Swordfish) is said to have written one of the scripts.

No information is really confirmed at all yet for G.I. Joe, but stay tuned as we’ll bring it to you as we get it.
