TORONTO – Bloated but not blue, the Rogers Cup second seed had little difficulty moving onto the tournament’s quarterfinals.
Jelena Jankovic handled third round opponent Sybille Bammer quite easily in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) tonight at the Rexall Centre, despite having stomach cramps she said at a post-game press conference.
“Except in the middle of the second set I started to have pain in my stomach. I had like knives, you know, like knives, like somebody putting knives in it. And I was little bit struggling,” she said. “And it’s quite bloated now, and I can be honest, I think, I could be getting like a woman’s things. I cannot lie. So it’s quite normal.”
There was no way to tell that Jankovic was “struggling” at all, judging by her dominant on-court performance. She polished off Bammer in just 63 minutes.
Breaking her Austrian opponent almost at will, the Serbian powerhouse finished the match quickly but said that there was always room to improve.
“Yeah, I would like to improve on my serve,” she said. “Of course, it’s one of the weakest parts of my game.”
Up next for Jankovic is a date with France’s Virginie Razzano.
“Yeah, she’s very tough,” she said. “And I just look forward to playing against her, and I hope, you know, that I can play at least better than I did today.”
