A Moment's All I Ask: Elvis Presley Week Special – 8.17.07

Elvis Presley left the world too soon on August 16, 1977, yet he’s probably more popular since his passing than he was when he was alive. This week has been filled with wonderful worldwide tributes, even in the incredible Memphis heat. Perhaps the greatest tribute has come from someone who knew him better than anyone—his daughter, Lisa Marie Presley.

The biggest news to come this week was that of Lisa Marie Presley’s duet with her father, something that she has had no interest in doing unless under the right circumstances, and the time was now. Lisa wanted to turn this duet into something good.

Lisa recorded “In the Ghetto” quickly, where award-winning producer and close friend of Lisa’s, David Foster, only had a few hours to lay it with the original Elvis recording. The music video filming took place in New Orleans with Tony Kaye, of American History X fame, under a tight timeframe. It was released to the world last night on iTunes and spinner.com, and all proceeds of the download go to the Presley Charitable Foundation, benefiting homeless families in New Orleans. More details can be found on the Presley Charitable Foundation at Lisa Marie Presley’s official site, at LisaPresley.com.

The video was beautifully done and might turn a few heads—baby holding guns, all done in black in white. I support what Lisa is doing with this social cause and social message, as “In the Ghetto” is a timeless song, and her vocals with her father blend together beautifully. I have no doubt that Elvis would have been proud. Elvis was a constant humanitarian throughout his career, donating to various causes and charities both publicly and privately, and Priscilla and Lisa Marie have continued to carry on with this tradition.
