TORONTO – It’s the best final that any Rogers Cup fan could hope for.
The top two seeds in the Toronto tournament will face off when Justine Henin meets Jelena Jankovic in tomorrow’s final.
Jankovic squeaked out a three-set victory (5-7, 6-3, 6-2) against Tatiana Golovin on Saturday night, to get past her tough French opponent.
The Serbian powerhouse came back to win the match after losing a tightly-contested opening set and struggled at times while going on to win the next two. Jankovic blamed her serve for the early miscues.
“Yeah, it was the serve, that was the biggest problem, because I didn’t serve well at all,” she said a post-game press conference. “I mean, it was not the greatest thing, and it was very, very frustrating for me to lose that set.”
The match seemed to go on forever and this was in sharp contrast to Henin’s relatively quick disposal of Zi Yan earlier in the day.
As a result, conditioning will definitely be a factor on Sunday even though Jankovic said that she wasn’t sure if it would make a difference.
“I don’t know. I really don’t know,” she said at a post-game press conference. “She has a lot of advantages,” she said with a laugh. “I’ve never beaten her before, and I don’t know how to do that, but I will just somehow during the match try to figure out a way.”
With the number of dropouts from the tourney, the Henin/Jankovic match was the best result possible for fans and organizers alike.
The match begins at 2 p.m. EST.
