At its heart, Superbad could be written off as just another stupid sex comedy, a bunch of high school friends trying to get laid. It’s been done before. With that misnomer out of the way let it be known that Superbad is hands down one of the funniest flicks of the year and easily the funniest film of its genre.

Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera) are the best of friends. They are both classically lovable losers who want nothing more than to “be that mistake” for the girls of their respective dreams. They get that chance when Seth’s crush Jules (Emma Stone) invites them to a graduation party at her house. The ante is upped when fellow loser Fogell (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) gets himself a fake ID, under the false name McLovin, so they can provide the party with alcohol.

Everything is going fine until a robbery at the liquor market separates Seth and Evan from Fogell. Seth and Evan spend the rest of the evening trying to get booze and make it to the party on time, while Fogell spends an evening with two crazy cops, Officers Slater (Bill Hader) and Michaels (Seth Rogen).

The plot is simple enough and if left to that alone would probably not be very good. But this comedy has something most films don’t: it’s co-written by Seth “Knocked Up” Rogen, who I think could easily be in the running for funniest man in Hollywood. In fine Rogen fashion the characters in this are very down to earth and feel like guys you might know. Likewise, the dialogue is some of the raunchiest, most hilarious that’s been heard in a while. The opening conversation between Seth and Evan is Seth deciding what porn website he’s going to subscribe to when he turns 18. Does he choose based on variety of porn or go with a nondescript web name like “Top 10” since his mom will be getting the bill?

Hill and Cera have amazing chemistry together and carry the film well. The films big surprise, however, comes from first time actor Christopher Mintz-Plasse as the loser’s loser Fogell. The McLovin joke is much funnier than the trailers give it credit and the joke never gets old. He steals most of the film’s best scenes.

This film is about as blue as it gets, daring to say things that most films wouldn’t even dream of thinking of saying. It pushes the PC boundaries without batting an eye and if you can handle that there’s no doubt that you will laugh till you hurt.
