The Show

Sean Combs has gone by many names. First, he was “Puff Daddy”. Next, we was “Puffy”. Later, he became “P. Diddy”. Now, he’s known as just “Diddy”. Everyone should really just call him “Rich”, because that’s what he is. Sean “Diddy” Combs is an record producer, mogul, CEO, clothing designer, and rapper all wrapped into one. He is currenty the richest hip-hop entertainer around today. His most recent ventures have been in the world of television. Some of his shows have been successes, while others have been failures. What category would the HBO comedy series from Diddy, The Bad Boys of Comedy, fall into exactly?

For The Bad Boys of Comedy, Diddy has gathered together the edgiest and hottest up-and-coming urban comedians around. Filmed live at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, this series presents uncensored comedy from 24 different comedians. Each episode features two appearances by P. Diddy himself, four comedy performances, and is hosted by rapper and comic Doug E. Fresh with Mr. Cee has the MC.

This is not really a reality TV shows like some of Diddy’s other shows. There are no “storylines” that tie everything together here. It’s basically a modern day version of Def Comedy Jam. Diddy takes the place of Russell Simmons, and really the only difference between these two shows are the hosts. That, and the comedians featured, of course.

For the most part, if you like urban comedy then you will like pretty much all of these comedians. Usually there is a few that are not as funny as the rest and some that are a lot funnier than most. The same is true here, but really everyone is pretty much equal in terms of laughs. Donnell Rawlings is probably the funniest one on this entire season. He is also the biggest “star” on the show having appeared on Chappelle’s Show, so that shouldn’t surprise you. But the others hold their own and some will surprise you on how funny they actually are.

Even if you watched a lot of urban comedy in the last few years, you will find a lot of comedians featured here that you have never seen before. Everyone is pretty funny too, so you are sure to laugh the majority of the time during this show. There are some comedians that are not as funny and there are some jokes that you may have heard before, but that’s normal. This is only the minority of the show. The large majority of the show is original and entertaining. Diddy has done a lot of different TV shows in the past, but his attempt at bringing you some of the newest urban comedians around is mostly a success.

The Video:

The video is given in widescreen color with an aspect ratio of 1.66:1, which is enhanced for 16X9 TVs. Transfer is good with minimal distortion. It’s pretty standard quality for a HBO show these days. No real problems at all.

The Audio:

The audio included is available in English Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo sound. There are subtitles available in English. Again, it’s pretty standard quality for a TV show. The dialogue comes out crisp and clear.

The Extras:

“Backstage with P. Diddy” Featurette
This is 7 minute featurette that is basically Diddy talking about the show and this season in particular. “HBO is the home comedy and Bad Boy is the home of bad boys” according to Diddy. Diddy answers some of these questions as well; “what is hip-hop all about?”, “how did he find these comedians”, “what was your first big break?”, and “when did he become all that?” among others. Fairly informative, so check that out after the performances.

THE INSIDE PULSE

If you like urban comedy, you will enjoy this. I can’t really recommend buying this if you are a fan of just a few of these people, though, as they are only given 6 or 7 minutes of stage time. But if you want to see a large number of funny urban comedians that are relatively new, then at least rent this.

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
