More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks – Resolution: Week 25

I really used to believe that there weren’t any albums that defied classification; however, I’d be hard-pressed to describe Chocolate Genius’ 2001 album, Godmusic.

I mean, this album is seriously all over the place. Its random nature probably inspired Cody ChesnuTT’s The Headphone Masterpiece, because when I listened to Godmusic that’s the album that I was reminded of most. Except Godmusic is much more polished.

My iPod says it’s “R&B” but it’s so much more than that. The songs range from typical singer/songwriter fare like “My Endless Fall” or the dedication to devotion “To Serve You” to more traditional R&B in “The Eyes of the Lord” to the cheap Casio beat on “Planet Rock”. But that variety makes sure that the album is never boring.

Of course, that variety also leaves you guessing. It’s not an album that sounds like Marc Anthony Thompson threw ideas around to see what stuck, but that description might not be that far off.

But who can blame him? After getting pigeon-holed in the ’80s, why not branch out and actively avoid classification? Most listeners might be turned off (and given the album’s poor sales that’s the case), but I’m intrigued.

I’m genuinely glad I gave this album a shot. I really only picked it up because I copped Chocolate Genius’ debut, Black Music, for one song. I but knowing that Godmusic was out of print, I copped it as well and put it aside for a rainy day. I’ve got to say that I’m pretty satisfied that I didn’t wait for the one rainy day of the year in Vegas to give the album its time to shine.
