American Idol Countdown Week Tuesday: #8 – Murtz Jaffer Interviews Haley Scarnato

There is no question that Haley Scarnato is the most beautiful woman that I have ever interviewed and I was happy to find that her personality is just as radiant. Scarnato talked about the role that looks played on American Idol and her plans for an upcoming country album when I talked to her before the Idol concert in Toronto.

Murtz Jaffer: Are you ready?

Haley Scarnato: Yup.

MJ: It’s going to be quick and painless. Kind of like the dentist.

HS: That’s perfect. (Laughs).

MJ: You had a great run on the show. Can you tell me what life has been like for you since it ended?

HS: Pretty much the same. When I went back home, people would recognize me here and there but everybody’s been really supportive and just loving it. Yeah. It’s been nice.

MJ: I was telling Chris that everybody was sort of known for their thing. Sanjaya for the hair. Chris for the whole personality thing. For you, it was always ‘she’s the hot one, she’s the hot one.’ In fact, I remember that Simon Cowell even called you ‘a little minx’ at one point. How much of a role do looks play on American Idol?

HS: I think if you can find your little niche in the competition, it’s the way to go. I mean it’s almost like they cast a group of people as characters ’cause they want a good TV show. They want to pertain to every audience member. So, definitely. It’s just fun. It’s show business. It’s all about getting dressed up and playing a role.

MJ: Is that what you were doing? Were you playing a role?

HS: I was definitely being myself. I didn’t want to go out there looking ugly or fat or whatever. (Laughs). You know what I mean? We have a great team and I got my hair and make-up done everyday and we have a stylist. So I was just being pulled in the direction and I was just going with it. It was fun!

MJ: Can you tell me about any performances that stood out to you? Were there any songs that stood out more than the rest?

HS: I guess the coming out performance was “Tell Him” just because it was more spunky and in-your-face. So that one was fun just because I was more relaxed and like ‘whatever, I am just going to go out there and have fun.’

MJ: I feel like you, more than anyone else knew that the cameras were there and you were really good at, you know, the extra smile for the camera. Were you conscious of that? That it was going to be on TV?

HS: Oh, definitely. I mean you really have to pay attention to the cameras because you’re trying to…

MJ: Get votes?

HS: Yeah. I mean the audience is America so you really want to try and reach them. It’s tough because you don’t know which camera is going to be on you. You just see a red light here and there. It’s fun and it was a good experience for me and I had a blast doing it. It was fun working everything. (Laughs).

MJ: I can imagine! Did you prefer doing the show or doing the tour?

HS: The show was the most amazing experience ever for me. But just to be able to say that I am on tour with these guys, they’re amazing. And going out on stage and not having to worry about the judges and just performing for the fans is so incredible and I love it! It really is so much fun.

MJ: And what’s next for you? An album?

HS: I hope so, yeah. I want to head to Nashville and record some country music. So we’ll see…

MJ: That’s perfect, thank you so much.

HS: Cool! Thank you. It was nice meeting you.

MJ: Have a great day.

The American Idols Live Tour hits the Portland Cumberland County Civic Center tonight and continues through Worcester and Philadelphia this week. The tour wraps up on Sept. 22 in Manchester, New Hampshire
