PWG CHIKARticles: A Recap of All Things INDY

This week in PWG CHIKARticles: A Recap of All Things INDY, catch up on the latest additions to CHIKARA’s Bruised event, PWG’s October 14th show Schadenfreude and other indy updates! Plus, find out which Indy Wrestler is enjoying 2007 the most.

2007: Year of the Quack

In late 2005, Mike Quackenbush was given career-threatening surgery to his back to remove cysts from his spine. Things weren’t looking so bright for Quack then. After months of being sidelined from all the action, he made his return to wXw in March capturing the wXw Title. Ever since then, Quack’s been doing nothing but getting more accomplishments under his name in the books. 2006 was the year to achieve his Lifelong Goal: To Compete in Japan. 2006 came and passed, and even-though he still had an amazing year, he still didn’t have a spot in Japan for him.

Mike Quackenbush started 2007 off with CHIKARA’s King of Trios. This event was the most successful event in CHIKARA’s history, drawing in over 200 fans to the New Alhambra a night full of fun. With Jigsaw and Shane Storm on his team, Mike Quackenbush won 2 rounds that night going on to claim the title as 2007’s King of Trios Champion.

Ring of Honor was banned from using talent that they were used to like Samoa Joe, Colt Cabana and the Murder City Machine Guns. On a quest to bring in new talent to freshen up the roster, RoH called in numerous new people with one of them being Mike Quackenbush. Now, I know it wasn’t his main goal to get into RoH. But I do bet it was on his list. It had to have been sweet for Quack to see that he was accepted into the RoH Family. But Quack’s accomplishments didn’t stop there, oh no. Let us fast forward to May.

May 11th, 2007 to be exact. Fight Sports Midwest put on “Chapter Two” in Portage, Indiana. The Main-Event for the show featured Japan’s NWA Junior Heavyweight Champion Tiger Mask IV defending his title against “Lightning” Mike Quackenbush. Realizing that if he won the belt, he would have a sure shot at getting into Japan. Quack walked in with hope of winning, and walked out with the NWA Junior Heavyweight Title and Tiger Mask IV’s mask. He may have won it quite unfairly, but he did what it took to take that belt. After the match, he cut a promo basically talking to all the promoters in Japan showing them that he tore off IV’s mask. At the end of the promo, he asked “Japan, do I have your attention now?” He went on to defend the title against Black Tiger IV and Akira Raijin. He won those matches cleanly, but still no answer from Japan. He knew that he would have to make a further impact on the INDY Scene.

Walking into TPI season as the IWA-MS Light Heavyweight Champion and IWA-DS Heavyweight Champion, Quack earned a spot in the Ted Petty Invitational. He won his first match, advancing into a 2nd Round Match against Joey Ryan. Taking a nasty spill after a botched tope con hilo, Quack was shook up but still won the match. After being looked at, it was announced that Quackenbush could not compete in his match against Josh Abercrombie to advance into the finals. To our surprise, Quack competed anyway and went on to win the match. He was being held back by Bryce Remsburg and the NWA Commissioner being told not to go back there. IWA-MS Heavyweight Title, IWA-MS Light Heavyweight Title, and the TPI 2007 Tournament Title was on the line in the 3-Way Finals match. Quack pinned Castagnoli after a tombstone driver to narrow it down to only Chuck Taylor and himself. Kicking out of the Omega Driver, Quack got Taylor in the CHIKARA Special to win. The crowd gave him a standing ovation, and Ian gave him a congratulatory speech. Mike responded “I want you to tell you all about what 2007 has meant to me. I married the girl of my dreams, we had an amazing King of Trios, I won a little thing called TPI and 10 days from now I’m going to Japan”.

Non INDY News worth mentioning

1) SAVE_US_222 promos are being given lots of airtime on WWE Programming. The video contains numerous cryptic messages that could possibly lead to the return of Chris Jericho.

2) Alex Shelley, Chris Sabin, Homicide and others have requested for their release from TNA. With the 2 Hour Shows coming up, TNA Management requested that they stay until after that schedule starts, promising more airtime for that talent. TNA signed Amazing Kong for their women’s division. That’s good news.

3) After a stiff RKO on an unforgiving table, John Cena tore his right pectoral muscle and is expected to miss 6-8 Months of action. WWE has stripped the title from Cena and will hold a title match at No Mercy.

2) Masked Men will also collide in Reading, PA. Jigsaw against Dragon Yuki has been signed for 10/26’s Bruised.

3) Ultramantis Black is going to IWA-DS to participate in this year’s Carnage Cup. When asked about why he was doing this, he said that he has conquered CHIKARA and is looking to expand his territory. That evil bastard.
