So, you’re a cop. (Actually, FBI – but work with me here, people.) You get put on a new assignment in Washington. (No, the state – rain, grunge, bad sports team, you get the idea.) You think you’ve seen a lot in your time, but are you prepared for a partner who’s eight feet tall and covered in fur?

Well, Agent Ginger Brown (what a great name) finds out when she’s introduced to Agent John Prufrock (an even better name), aka Proof. And, incidentally, aka Bigfoot. (Yeah, the Bigfoot. Y’know, Sasquatch. That dude.) Agent Brown gets this assignment because she is, as one character puts it, “smart, stubborn and you believe what you see above all other considerations.” And when your job now covers what could be easily described as “some crazy shit”, those are pretty key qualifications.

The artwork is a bit minimalist and rough, but effective: the action scenes are easy to follow, and the main characters are all easily distinguishable. The dialogue is top-notch, and the exposition is used especially effectively: I really appreciated the “Cryptoid” boxes thrown in randomly, which read like a “Phenomena for Dummies” manual. The first issue covers Bigfoot (duh), a golem (the Hebrew version, not “My precious”), and the Chupacabra. The creators obviously know their mythology, and I look forward to seeing what they cover in future storyline arcs.

Two parts “X-Files”, one part “Hellboy”, and just a dash of that really cool Six Million Dollar Man episode from my youth, “Proof” is a lot of fun.
