Ultimate Marvel Handbook #217

Features

Welcome to yet another edition of the Marvel Handbook. My name is Jim Trabold of course. With my partner, Daron. How are you today, Daron?

I’m pretty good…getting ready to go into work…yay. I have to apologize for being a bit behind this week. We really should be putting up our second article for the week, but I’ve been swamped with school work this week and haven’t had the time to get on here…

I‘m not that bad. I‘m looking forward to this one. Should be a very good week with Cory mail and more. Let‘s start.

Break it down.

with all the wolverine history stuff going on in the column i was wondering what the worst injury he has ever suffered? i remember him being crucified on a giant X and then there was when he got the adamantium ripped out of him, but has there been ones that were worse than those?

How about in Civil War recently when he was stripped down to just his skeleton? I’d say that was the worst he’s ever suffered.

That‘s a very good one. I think writers like torturing Wolverine a lot. They know he can heal anyway so they can get away with quite a lot.

I’d probably say his worst injuries are probably having to watch all the women he cares about die. That’s something he just can’t heal…

JPF emails

Here are a few questions.

Who is considered the ultimate earth bound bad guy, in both the 616 and Ultimate Universes? The reason i thought of this is that in Ultimate Spiderman when Green Goblin exploded the main person that the president was worried about was Magneto.

The ultimate Earth bound bad guy? Doctor Doom of course. This mad man has done so much it‘s hard to come up with a short list of things. I know the ultimate version might not be as bad (not an ultimate fan really) but I think the 616 version makes up for anything that the Ultimate version has yet to do.

I honestly think it’s a tie between Doom and Mags (when he’s evil of course). They can both be pretty scary when they want to be.

Now on a completely different topic. How do writers get paid. Do they get paid for the comic they are writing, for the sales of the comic, or by name recognition.

From what I know of this one. I know artist are normally payed on the page and recognition so I would think most writers are close to the same. Recognition/sales are about the same because once your known more people are going to read your books

I don’t think writers get a “page rate” like artists do. I believe they get some sort of salary. That salary however, does take into account “name recognition” as you say. Also, both artists and writers get bonuses on the back end depending on how the comic sells, and residuals on trade sales. There’s a lot more to it other than straight up “page rates.”

Thank You,

No trouble.

Cory emails

Sup guys…Cory’s here….let’s get to it:

1- I think that I heard this on a rumor mill some where, but how does this sound? Paul Walker as Captain America!

Let me look him up. Hmm not a bad resume. I’ve seen some of his work and he’s not that bad of a choice. I mean I’ve heard some bad rumors. This one is not bad at all

Um…I disagree. Has anyone scene the new Flash Gordon show? Paul Walker as Cap just reeks of this. He “may” look the part (though not quite big enough), but he doesn’t have the chops to pull it off. Plus I’m trying to envision Paul talking Robert Downy in a future Avengers movie, and I can’t stop laughing. So if it wasn’t clear, no. I think that’s horrible casting.

2- I seen the teaser pic of the upcoming X-Men disassembled book….WTF is this about? No more X-Men? I also seen a pic of the new X-Force team with Wolverine, X-23, and Warpath? what is going on?

Allow me

X-Force is a new ongoing series debuting in February 2008. The artist is Clayton Crain. The new team of Wolverine, X-23, Wolfsbane, and Warpath

Cable is an ongoing series debuting in March 2008. The artist is Ariel Olivetti

Cable/Deadpool is canceled after Messiah Complex for the new Cable series. The question of what happens to Deadpool is in the air.

In the aftermath of “Messiah CompleX,” there is a new status quo for the X-Men. If indeed there is an X-Men.

Not all the books will exist after Messiah CompleX and those that do will be drastically changed. There will be changes galore.

Good! Too bad they’ll probably come back with even more books after they cancel some instead of just pairing down the line…

3- I also heard about a new Cable “solo” ongoing series. What more more Nate & Wade? If so, how bout the current title becoming a Deadpool group series? (Deadpool, Outlaw, Weasel, Sandy, Agent X, and BOB!)

I want Deadpool in something. I want him to get a new ongoing. I do like your idea of who could team up with him in the series to. We need more Deadpool

4- About last weeks worst heroes/villians list, I noticed Traithalon. isn’t he a former Avenger? Besides that, what are his other claims to fame, if any?

Let‘s see

Real Name: Delroy Garrett, Jr.
Occupation: Adventurer
Identity: Publicly known
Legal Status: Citizen of the United States
Place of Birth: Unrevealed
Group Affiliation: Avengers, also a member of the Triune of Understanding
Base of Operations: Avengers Mansion
First Appearance: AVENGERS Vol. 3, #8

Delroy Garrett Jr. was a very promising young athlete, who broke all the track and field records at high school, and eventually ended up on the U.S. Olympic track team. Unfortunately, he got too caught up in the competition, and wanted to win too badly, so he turned to illegal steroids. He got caught, and was stripped of his three gold medals and banned from competition.

Delroy wallowed in depression and shame for a while after that, until he discovered the Triune Understanding. They were a kind of spiritual group, or Church, founded by a man named Jonathan Tremont. As Delroy began to believe in the Triune teachings, he eventually found peace and let go of his anger towards himself.

This also led to him gaining super-powers; Delroy was now three times as strong, fast and agile as humanly possible! Delroy thought that the Triune’s had helped to unlock some power within him, but Tremont had actually imbued him with the power of another superhero, the 3-D Man, whom Tremont held captive.

Delroy became the hero Triathlon, and served as a champion and public symbol for the Triune Understanding. Tremont created Triathlon to serve as a weapon against a great evil, which the Triune Understanding was created to oppose. However, Tremont kept these details secret from Delroy.

In the early days of his superheroing career, Triathlon worked alone, but he ended up working alongside the Avengers on a few cases. Eventually, he was invited to join the team. It was a very controversial decision, and there was a lot of conflict over it. The Avengers and the Triune Understanding had a very public feud going, which stemmed from Tremont organizing a smear campaign against the Avengers. The goal was to make the Triunes look like they were being persecuted by the Avengers, in order to draw attention, sympathy and new recruits.

The Avengers government liason, Duane Freeman, suggested recruiting Triathlon into the Avengers. Duane hoped that adding a black man to the active roster would help to diffuse some of the racial protests that the Avengers were facing. However, since both Duane and Triathlon are Triune members, some of the Avengers, Iron Man in particular, were highly suspicious, and feared Triathlon was a spy for the Triunes. As it turns out, Tremont had not planned on Triathlon joining the team, but was not at all opposed to the idea, since it drew him more attention by having the Triunes most promiment memberin a high-profile group like the Avengers. Triathlon misinterpreted the Avengers reservations, and thought that they were racially motivated, and that they didn’t want him because he was black. He also reacted negatively to the Avengers suspicions about the Triunes, since they had helped him turn his life around.

Eventually, Triathlon did agree to join, so that he could prove the Avengers wrong about the Triunes. Due to this conflict, it took a long time for Triathlon to fit in with the team. However, Triathlon did start to accept the Avengers and they accepted him. He made some friends among the team, and began to understand the reasons why the Avengers had suspicions about the Triunes. Despite his very shaky beginning, Triathlon became a valued and respected member of the Avengers.

Eventually, Jonathan Tremont’s corruption was revealed, and Triathlon played a key role in defeating him, freeing the 3-D Man from captivity and stopping the Triple-Evil that the Triunes were created to fight. With Tremont gone, the Triunes are working to reorganize. Despite their corrupt founder, the Understanding did do some good for people, and they want to start again. They have invited Triathlon to be a part of it, but he has declined for now, prefering to concentrate on being a hero and an Avenger.

5- Speaking of both (Avengers & worst heroes), what former Avengers do you guys think shouldn’t have been Avengers or wasn’t Avenger-material?

Other then Triathlon? How about a good old top ten

1. Triathlon
2. Swordsman II
3. Magdalene
4. Masque
5. Moira Brandon
6. Marrina
7. Whizzer
8. Echo
9. Lionheart
10. Sandman

I’ve never honestly been a huge Avengers fan…but seeing as how almost the entirety of the Marvel U is or was an Avenger. I’d say a good 2/3rds of them probably didn’t belong…

6- So guys (Daron), if Callisto isn’t Mutant Zero, who is? Marrow…or dare I say Revanche?

I may have a new one the could come to mind. That is if she‘s mutant. Typhoid Mary

I don’t know…I just think Callisto is a stupid character and one that doesn’t deserve the buildup this character has been given…

7- Is it just me or does the newest incarnation of The New Warriors…basically Generation X 2.0? Jubilee as Wondra, Chamber as Decibel, and Synch maybe being Night Thrasher.

You are basicly right for the most part. Gen X with some added members to replace those MIA. You add

I mean Beak being Blackwing, Angel being Tempest, Radian being Phaser, and Tattoo being Longstrike

8- So Daron, about my Thor question from before…what feats hasn’t Thor done or yet to do?

Daron you got this one.

Huh? I’m confused. Did you ask a question before that I didn’t answer? I don’t quite get what you’re asking here…

9- Speaking of Thor, his new title looks good. Issue #3 was amazing. Great to see him finally confront Iron Man and kick his ass. Although he still doesn’t seem to yet know of Cap’s death. I wonder just how hard that will affect him. Will be be pissed enough to kick more Stark ass or what?

If Thor doesn‘t know now (which is very possible) he‘s going to be very mad at whoever has anything to do with it. The fact is that Thor was close to Cap and since Cap was worthy of the hammer he saw him as worthy friend and ally. Thor definitely will not be pleased

10- That origin question I asked bout Thor’s hammer creation and the origin of DD, I believe I read that in an old Wizard magazine. Just seems to me like a bunch of literary coincedences and fanboy creativity.

Very much so. The one thing is that fans come up with interesting ideas that could work. Mostly none of them are serious.

11- The worst Wolverine injury??? Wow, where do I start? This could be endless. Does this include mental as well as physical???

1-Cyber gouging out his eye
2- Sabretooth slitting his throat & throwing him off a cliff
3- WWHulk X-Men #2-Him receiving blow after blow, and possibly receiving (temporary)brain damage.
4- Losing his left hand in AOA
5- Killing Mariko
6- Getting his face blew off by The Punisher’s shotgun
7- Getting shot in the balls by The Hood
8- Nitro blowing him up…literally
9- Getting bitten by a Savage Land dinosaur
10- “Killing” Rose

Good ones. Don‘t forget Cyber breaking his bone claws.

12- Speaking of Wolverine and his reputation, this is for both of you guys. What can be or has to be done to fix my fave character’s image/rep?

I say we take him out of all the titles. He‘s in way to many titles and most fans hold that against him. He‘s got to get back to where he was used less and not used like he is now. Put him in Wolverine and Wolverine only for like a year. This way you get him away from all the hating and the like. You have to make sure the writers that do Wolverine‘s main title also don‘t do a bit of what‘s done now with he can come back from the dead, heal from everything and the writer will do everything to show just that. It‘s like writers want to see how far to push it. You can‘t have that anymore.

I’d say it’s way too late for that. But the main thing at this point is to make him a LOT less prevalent. And then go back and rewrite his horrendous origin story. Until THAT goes away, I’ll never really like the character again…James? No…I don’t think so.

13- After recently seeing his lil tussle with The Punisher, where does Winter Soldier rank among Marvel’s top fighters? Is he Top 10, 15?

Hmmmmm let‘s see. Living. *ruling out those with super human like strength like Thor, Hulk and the like)

1.Wolverine.
2. Iron Fist
3. Shang-Chi
4. Taskmaster (I admit I could have him at 1)
5. Deadpool
6. Black Panther
7. Silver Samurai
8. Daredevil
9. Elektra
10. Typhoid Mary
11. Psylocke
12. Winter Soldier
13. Punisher

Now this is my list. It doesn’t reflect everyone on this site and likely can and will be played with.

Um yeah…Tasky should definitely be #1 and Wolvie should be A LOT lower! As should Deadpool.

14- (Cue the drumroll please) WWHulk #5, The Sentry versus the Hulk! So I guess this battle is finally what will put the Sentry on the map huh? I mean so far he’s been way more mental, than physical. SO far his only claim to fame has been what…ripping Carnage in half? I do say that it is about time!

Yep. This is the big one. Since we can really only go on facts we‘ve seen in comics. (I‘m not going to go on past events that in reality never happened but where retconned into the past myself) So this is the big one.

15- Is the last sentence a possible tie-in tothe Skrull invasion in New Avengers? During his time as Death, Wolverine is replaced on the X-Men by a Skrull impostor, with the switch having being made during a recent X-Men mission on a moon, which served as a base for Skrull agents training to act as long-term impostors for Earth’s heroes. The real Wolverine, in the form of Death, goes on to kill the Skrull impostor. This episode may be an early indicator of a major 2008 Marvel Comics storyline.

Some people have mentioned this before when mentioning the Skrull invasion. I could see them trying to use it if they can fit it into their plans.

16- Speaking of ole Logan, what happened to Elsie Dee & Albert? Remember them?

The funny thing. The last time I saw both of these figures was in Exiles. Exiles #85 Albert and Elsie-Dee from Earth #5211 to be exact.

But last 616 appearance: Canada, they found a burial mound containing a clawed Adamantium skeleton. Bargaining with Spiral to be sent back in time, the trio arrived in the middle of a battle between rival factions of the Siksika tribe. Elsie-Dee and Albert encountered a temporally displaced Forge and Wolverine from a decade ahead of their own era, who had traveled back to combat the Adversary. Forge and Wolverine vanished through time again; with no access to time travel, Albert and Elsie-Dee stayed with the Siksika until their batteries ran down. They were found in the modern era by Bloodscream, who recharged them. Albert located their modified Stealth jet, and the pair resumed their travels together.

Well that’s it for me…for now at least. Thanks guys…till we meet again. Thanks a mil, Make Mine Marvel, and See ya in 7!!

See you next time Cory.

Indeed. And hopefully in less than 7.
