The Film:

By now, most people should know what they are getting into if they sit down to watch Robert Rodriguez’s half of Grindhouse, Planet Terror. Zombies, massive amounts of violence, explosions, nudity, more zombies, more violence, oh yeah and Rose McGowen with a frickin’ machinegun for a leg!

Grindhouse fans will be happy to learn that this DVD includes Rodriguez’s Machete trailer. It’s the perfect way to start out this visual feast for the senses.
While there is a plot it is very much secondary to the characters, the actor, the fight sequences and all those zombies.

Freddy Rodríguez stars as El Wray, the obligatory action movie bad ass. Along with his ex-girlfriend, Cherry the stripper with one leg, and a cadre of other misfits and colorful characters he leads the charge against a horde of zombie’s unleashed by a government chemical.

This film is Rodriguez at his finest. He works with a limited budget to create a horror action film that is reminiscent of John Carpenters hey day of the 80’s. Rodriguez creates a wonderful world where six chambered guns fire seven times and cars and buildings explode for no reason. Machine gun legs fire without the trigger being pulled and helicopter propellers are used to chop up zombies. A husband and wife try to kill each other amongst all this other carnage and two brothers squabble over a BBQ recipe.

It seems rather obvious to state, but Planet Terror is not for everyone. The squeamish and faint of heart with turn away and coverer their eyes. However, those who can indulge in Rodriguez’s extravagance are in for one hell of a ride. Plus, this DVD edition is about 10 minutes longer and is packed with loads of special features.

Machinegun leg, how frickin’ cool is that?

The DVD:

This film is presented in 1.85:1 widescreen. Sound is in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround. Also in Spanish 5.1. English and Spanish Subtitles.

Disc 1:

Commentary with Robert Rodriguez: This is a great commentary track. You can tell that Rodriguez had a blast making this film and loves talking about it. Some of the information is repeated in the disc 2 extras but it’s still fun and filled with great facts.

Audience Reaction Track: If you missed it in the theater you can watch it with this track on and pretend you’re there. This is kinda lame really. Whatever.

Disc 2:

10-Minute Film School: As always Rodriguez does his 10-minute film school and imparts some of his film knowledge. He shows how some effects and stunts were done in the film and how to do them rather cheaply. Thanks Robert! Also: it is here that Rodriguez mentions the forth coming Grindhouse 2 Disc DVD.

The Badass Babes And Tough Guys of Planet Terror: These two extras focus on the casting of all the great actors who are in the film. Why he cast them and how the character was altered because of the casting. Good stuff.

Sickos, Bullets and Explosions: The Stunts of Planet Terror: Here we learn all about the zombies, or “Sickos” as they call them here as well as the action scenes and all that fun stuff.

The Friend, The Doctor, and the Real Estate Agent: Rodriguez cast three people in his life who weren’t really actors and here we get to learn who they are and why they were cast. I wish I were friends with Robert.
