The Show

Clark Kent is well on his way to becoming Superman as we have seen in all the films and read in tons of comic books. But what was never quite clear was all the things that happened during his young adult years growing up and going to high school in Smallville. Did he wear the tights to school? Was Clark the fastest runner on the track team? Was the obsession with Lois Lane evident even back when he was younger? Did he get nervous before a big date?

Smallville is a fantastic look inside the world of Superman that is not known to most people and introduces new storylines that just wouldn’t seem imaginable otherwise. The first five seasons had their ups and downs with some being absolutely phenomenal while others were incredibly forgettable. It seems the strength of Smallville lies in the episodes that continue the storyline from one to the next. Having recently picked up all the seasons and watched them in order, it really is a series that needs to have been from the beginning to catch on to everything going on.

Season six has a great running storyline throughout that has continued somewhat from the past few and that is the love triangle of Clark, Lex Luthor, and Lana Lang. Clark of course loves Lana and it’s obvious that her allegiance lies with him, but she is all set to marry Lex who truly loves her. His father Lionel is going to make sure that he does everything in his power to see that Lana marries his son. Sound a bit confusing? It really isn’t and is played out perfectly over the course of the entire season. That is what makes Smallville so awesome.

There were a number of new arrivals into the town of Smallville this season that comic book fans can rejoice over. I never read many comics in my lifetime, but when other characters and such make appearances; it’s still very exciting. Green Arrow, Cyborg, Aquaman, and Bizarro are just a few of the new faces showing up and making things even more fun. And if you were never a comic book reader and only saw the Superman films, then you’re sure to recognize the name of Zod. Catching on from the end of season five, Brainiac had just opened a portal for Zod to come through and take over Lex’s body. Seems a bit far-fetched but that is what makes this series so fun.

Clark Kent is coming into his own as the man of steel and slowly realizing what he is to do with his life on now his second home planet. Believe me that it’s great that it is going so slowly too because it simply means that each season finale will bring another new season. Who knows what stars could possibly show up and what comic book heroes or villains could reveal themselves into the microcosm that is Smallville? Will the Martian Manhunter (another new appearance this season) continue to help Clark learn what his father had destined for him? Are things going to continue to get more bizarre? There are so many questions to be answered and surely more that will pop up, but season six delivers the goods on many levels with new faces, deep drama, and intense battles.

Episodes

Disc One:

Zod: Clark is trapped in the Phantom Zone with the criminals trapped there by his father and needs help from someone, anyone. Back on Earth, Zod has possessed Lex and plans to turn the planet into the next Krypton where Lana will provide his heir.

Sneeze: Clark has a cold and it isn’t your common everyday bug, especially when he sneezes. Lex and Lana’s relationship starts to get a bit stronger while Lex has become target number one for abductors. There’s a new arrival in Smallville and he carries a bow, Oliver Queen.

Wither: Love is in the air for everyone but Clark as Chloe and Jimmy, Lana and Lex, and Oliver and Lois seem to all have eyes for one another. Meanwhile, a plant progeny from the Phantom Zone is using her beauty to seduce men and then kill them when she’s done with them.

Disc Two:

Arrow: Lana is becoming more like Lex everyday she is close to him; even learning how to do some of his traits such as blackmail. After stealing a necklace from Martha Kent, Clark is hot on the trail of the culprit who turns out to be Oliver Queen but in the guise of Green Arrow.

Reunion: Lex and Oliver were prep school rivals some years ago and old grudges are not easily forgotten, especially by a Luthor. The high school reunion is upon them and Oliver’s old buddies are mysteriously dying off one by one. Clark has realized a horrible discovery, Raya and others have escaped from the Phantom Zone.

Fallout: Raya has come back to Smallville where she reconnects with Clark. Another escapee from the Phantom Zone has arrived in Smallville as well to get revenge for his entrapment. All of these happenings have Clark deep in thought and thinking the Fortress of Solitude should be rebuilt, which he can do with Raya’s help.

Disc Three:

Rage: Green Arrow finds out that he is virtually indestructible after an experimental drug gives him super healing powers. Chloe and Clark find him to be acting strange as well due to a fierce side effect from the drug.

Static: Lex is the captive of a runaway from Lexcorp Labs who has trapped him in another realm where no-one can hear or see him. Clark meanwhile gets unexpected help as he does battle with an escapee from the Phantom Zone that devours the skeletons of his victims.

Subterranean: Being a loner himself, Clark befriends an immigrant boy that is seeking his mother in Smallville. His new friendship leads Clark to uncover some dark secrets about many of Smallville’s laborers.

Hydro: Lois has suspicions about Green Arrow and feels she may know his true identity. At the same time, Daily Planet gossip columnist Linda Lake’s ability to morph into water helps her figure out Chloe’s secret which she plans to publish for everyone to read.

Disc Four:

Justice: My second favorite episode in the entire season just because it is awesome seeing other heroes make their appearance. Four heroes are in Smallville to destroy Lex Labs and hope to have Clark join forces with them for they know he will only make them stronger. But can Smallville handle the team of Clark Kent, Green Arrow, Cyborg, Aquaman, and Impulse?

Labyrinth: Clark wakes up in a psychiatric ward where his entire world has been turned upside down. Lex is wheelchair bound and his mother is married to Lionel. He also finds out that Lana is completely in love with him. Clark has no idea what is going on, but must decide if this is where he wants to stay.

Crimson: A very strong and strange lipstick causes Lois to fall in love with the first man she sees; Clark. But one kiss transfers the powers to him which causes him to go around kissing every woman he’s ever wanted to, including Lana.

Trespass: Chloe and Jimmy break up after Jimmy is sure that she isn’t over Clark. This causes Clark to convince Jimmy they are nothing but friends, but Chloe has to think things over to be certain. Meanwhile, Lana has a strange stalker.

Disc Five:

Freak: A young boy named Tobias was blinded by the meteor storm but gained a much stronger ability; one that can identify others that have abilities from the meteors. One of the first he figures out is Chloe. Lana begins wondering more and more about Clark as her suspicions grow.

Promise: Lex and Lana have finally come to that fateful day of their wedding, but there is much unhappiness in the air from not only Clark, but also Lana. Lionel Luthor makes sure though that Lana marries Lex.

Combat: A fight club that shows its deathly battles on the internet has gotten the interest of Lois so she heads out to cover it, and ends up getting caught right in the middle of it. Clark steps in to help and ends up in the main event of the fight club against the champion Titan, a Phantom Zone escapee.

Progeny: Strange occurrences with her memory have Chloe wondering if the effects of the meteor are kicking in. She soon realizes that the effects are her mother using her strange powers to get in contact with Chloe and reunite. Lex finds out about Chloe’s mother’s powers and intends to use her.

Disc Six:

Nemesis: Lionel reveals to Lana why he forced her to marry Lex. Meanwhile Lex has things come back to haunt him by a woman who says he kidnapped her husband. She traps him in a tunnel and soon Clark is trapped in there with him. The tunnel is laced with bombs and set to go off if they don’t get out soon, but thanks to kryptonite everywhere, Clark is helpless. The sworn enemies must work together to survive.

Noir: its back to the forties as Jimmy has dreams of Smallville from sixty years ago. Clark is a bumbling reporter for the Daily Planet while Lois sings in a bar owned by Lionel Luthor. Lana plans the demise of her husband Lex Luthor. It all seems so strange, but is it real?

Prototype: Lex has plans on turning a wounded soldier from Afghanistan into a super warrior with his Ares Project. When a senator threatens to out the secrets of Lex Labs, the warrior is set to attack and kill the senator. But the warrior receives new orders to kill the one who witnessed the attack, Lois Lane.

Phantom: Many secrets are revealed in the season finale as Clark finds out exactly why Lana married Lex and also reveals his secrets to her. Lois heads to the dam to find out exactly what is going on which leads to trouble and some extra help from Chloe. Clark comes face to face with the final phantom and things turn out to be quite bizarre. This is my favorite episode of the entire season for it is fantastic.

The Video

The episodes are shown in 1.66:1 Anamorphic Widescreen format and look wonderful. When originally aired they looked good so coming to DVD, they were bound to keep the quality up. Darks look good and colors are always bright and vibrant.

The Audio

The episodes are heard in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and it is the audio that makes each one even better. All dialogue can be heard perfectly clear while the music makes the moods just come to life. Great sound effects for explosions and super powers coming to life just make for dorky emotions.

Special Features

Green Arrow: The Legend Of The Emerald Archer – Mark Hamill narrates a fantastic twenty-five minute feature focusing on the history of the Green Arrow. Lots of interviews and information from comic book writers letting the world in on the secrets of Oliver Queen.

Smallville: Big Fans – The place is the San Diego Comic Con and shows thirty minutes of some of biggest fans of Clark Kent and Smallville. Here I thought I was a huge Superman fan, but in no way does my obsession compare with some of the people showcased in these interviews. It’s always fun to watch the fan kids.

Unaired Scenes – Each disc has an episode or two with some deleted scenes. A few interesting ones here and there so be sure to check them all out.

Smallville Legends: The Oliver Queen Chronicles – Six animated mini-episodes that last almost four minutes a piece. They merely tell the life of Green Arrow from a child to today. Nothing too exciting.

The Making Of Smallville Legends – This is your “making of” featurette that runs ten minutes and is split into three separate parts: pre-production, production, and animation process. The mini-episodes were cheesy and not so good, so it isn’t like this was any more enjoyable.

Smallville Legends: Justice And Doom – A 3-D comic book of the Justice League versus the super-soldiers of Lex Luthor. It is automatic and flips through the pages for you. Read fast because it only lasts about ten minutes so more then likely you’ll have to watch/read it through a second time.

The Inside Pulse

As has already been said, you need to really have been watching this series from the beginning or caught yourself up on all the DVD sets like I did to fully understand everything that is going on. Sure you can just get this one and follow it along, but there are going to be things said and done that you just won’t get. Season six of Smallville is clearly one of my favorite seasons so far and the further we get away from season four, the better. There are some really good special features included on this set too except for the “Oliver Queen Chronicles,” but no-one ever said you had to watch everything included on a DVD. Smallville is one of the best comic book to show adaptations to ever grace the small screen. It may even beat out some of the great animated series out there because it is just that good. I highly recommend you go faster then a speeding bullet and grab this set and the other seasons now. Just don’t go so fast you get a speeding ticket because you can’t fly away from the cops.
