Make Movement: Honoring The Fabulous Moolah and A Flat Show

Archive

I realize that this week’s edition was supposed to be practically a throw-back show to the late 90s with “one night only” of DX as well as the return of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, some of the material worked and some of it didn’t. The other element of the night was acknowledging the passing of the on and only, Fabulous Moolah. I’m so glad they gave her a great video package in the second hour, since she has always been one of McMahon’s favorite employees. Moolah has always been one of my favorite people to watch, a true class act and a really great performer. People who are only aware of her comedy with Mae Young are missing out. I enjoyed her book on her life story and I hope everyone will check out the great independent movie that featured Moolah on women’s wrestling, called Lipstick and Dynamite. I want to send my greatest sympathies to her family and friends, in and out of the squared circle.

The one thing I would have liked was for once, a good WWE’s women’s match be on TV during the same show that features the special tribute to the greatest women’s wrestler of all time. Why not allow someone like Mickie James (who is being misused completely in a Y2J/Trish/Christian type storyline) have a special match with Victoria, so we could have a real women’s match in HONOR of Moolah? Beth Phoenix and Kelly Kelly is not the answer and is insulting. I get it that Beth needs to be pushed as this destroyer but no one would have missed her heel heat on this one night that featured a good tribute to Moolah.

As far as the rest of the show, sometimes it had good energy, and sometimes fans clearly wondered what in the hell was that mess? The DX segment went so long, with the only point being that Hollywood writers are on strike and “they aren’t” – with the irony that every part of the segment had the Hollywood WWE feel to it. Definitely never thought I’d see The Great Khali, The Boogeyman and Hornswaggle being Oddities 2007, I mean, Degeneration X.

Carlito with his new best friend, Snitsky versus jobber had no business being the second match on TV much less be on RAW at all. With this, Super Crazy and Jim Duggan versus The World’s Greatest Tag Team (Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas), I couldn’t help but wonder, did other talent miss their flights somehow and this is what we’re left with? What a waste for Benjamin and Haas, I hate how they are treated as such jokes.

About the only major highlight of RAW was Santino Marella and Stone Cold’s long-awaited payoff against Santino. The main event with DX versus Orton and Umaga, was great energy and HBK absolutely nailed his superkick on Orton. The feel-good finish worked but the rest of the show, pretty flat.
