Ultimate Marvel Handbook #220

Features

Hey all and welcome to another edition of the Marvel Handbook. I’m Jim of course with my partner and editor Daron. Hey Daron how are you anyway bud?

I’m decent. I started a new location at work this week. Some of my previous stress is gone, though this is a much busier location so I’ve got some different stress building up, but such is life.

I‘m not bad. I‘m really glad we‘re getting more email and I want our readers to keep it up to. I‘m really liking the fact we got a ton this week. Hopefully it‘s enough. I‘m holding 1-2 others for later.

Sounds like the sensible thing to do.

Nightvision asked

With all the drama over the ” Return ” of Captain America can we expect this one to stay around or will it be like when Clint was Cap only for a short while?

I‘d say this new Cap will stay around at least until the movie comes out. With the movie being a catalyst to bring Steve back.

I’d say that idea will only last as long as the Bru is running the show. If he were to leave the book for whatever reason, I think they’d have to bring Steve back. I still think he’ll be back sooner.

Hey Jim & Dark Overlord,

Hey Bevil Deadle

Yo.

Been a while since I wrote anything to you but I just wanted to pick up on this:

Quote:

5- Speaking of both (Avengers & worst heroes), what former Avengers do you guys think shouldn’t have been Avengers or wasn’t Avenger-material?

Other then Triathlon? How about a good old top ten

1. Triathlon
2. Swordsman II
3. Magdalene
4. Masque
5. Moira Brandon
6. Marrina
7. Whizzer
8. Echo
9. Lionheart
10. Sandman

I’d rather see Lionheart a little nearer to #1, and you never found space for Teen Tony Stark, Doc Druid or a few others, but I’d like to take issues I’d take with some of those you did include:

I didn‘t have room for all them. It‘s complicated to fit every bad Avenger on a top 10.

1) Moira Brandon and Whizzer. They were both Honorary Members. Can you really say that they make crappy Honorary Avengers? They have the same status as Rick Jones and Mar-Vell in that respect. And if you look at crappy Honorary Members, then half of the Guardians of the Galaxy (Niki, Charlie-27 for example) are far worse.

That‘s an insult to the Guardians of the Galaxy. They where always cool in my opinion. I enjoyed them. I think honorary would count for the list as well though.

2) Marrina. As far as I’m aware, she never joined at all. She served with the team (by virtue of being married to Namor) until she turned into crazy-lizard-Leviathan-thing and the team was forced to kill her, but she never joined.

She counts as honorary as well.

I also think the same may be true of Swordsman II as of Marrina, but I’m way too lazy to check that one. I know Magdalene joined, but I didn’t think that Swordsman did – maybe I’m wrong.

Swordsman did just like Magdalene, both where Avengers.

Also, the following are people who are perfectly workable heroes in their own right but had no business being Avengers: Crystal, Darkhawk & Reed Richards (but not Sue). And I love Darkhawk.

I liked Crystal as an Avenger. Of all the Inhumans she did fit. I admit though Black Bolt would be sick if he was more. Darkhawk wasn’t Avengers material YET. Note yet since he was still new. He would’ve been good in just New Warriors. Reed fits as an Avenger just like all of the other FF in reality. (Torch being the only one to officially not join of course.

On another topic, which team do you see as being most like an Avengers Youth Team? I know there’s the Young Avengers, but they’re more legacy characters that work better in DC than in Marvel. However there’s been a whole load of young teams (New Warriors & New New Warriors, Runaways, The Initiative etc) that could fill that role better.

Hmmm well the original New Warriors where pretty close with being a younger Avengers type team.

I agree, the original New Warriors were probably the closest thing Marvel has had to a Junior Avengers team.

My own vote would be for the New Warriors from Series I. Justice, Firestar and Rage have already been Avengers, Nova seems to be the only hero in space at the moment, and Speedball is turning into the most powerful member of the new T-Bolts. Even Night Thrasher (worst hero name ever), may or may not be still alive in New New Warriors and leading another team. Interesting (given my comments about Young Avengers) that the only member of the original team confirmed dead at Stamford is the legacy hero – Nita.

Heh. Good points there.

ok how exactly do you do a top 10 marksman in the Marvel Universe and not include Hawkeye? I mean come on he’s Hawkeye he should be on the list (probably around #4)

How did I miss Clint? Alright I‘d place Clint at 2 and move everyone else down a spot. My fault.

What were you thinking, Jim? You’re fired!

also a little help the current avengers lineup includes the new guy Sentry, but whatever happened to former Force Works member and Avenger’s associate Century? Did Marvel just forget about him or what?

Okay I have no idea what happened to this guy…Jim you’re rehired. Answer the man’s question.

Century. Last time we saw him was in Force Works 22. Century tried to comfort Wanda when they gained consciousness again. After that they hunted down Cybermancer and her allies and confronted them. Cybermancer suddenly began to dissolve, and Wonder Man attacked Wanda, thinking her responsible. Century fought Wonder Man, but after Cybermancer was gone, Century noticed that the alternate Ultron started to manifest the same energy decay. Century teleported Force Works and the extradimensional Wonder Man and Ultron back to Kang’s time-gate in the Works before they dissolved. Century watched Ultron dissolving, Wonder Man returning into his collapsing timeline, and the portal exploding after Cybermancer’s armor was returned through it. Afterwards it was decided to disband Force Works. Century planned to travel around on Earth to learn more about his adopted home. The Chaos computer alerted Force Works of a situation in Washington, and Century joined them one last time on a mission.
