– Hughes wants Tommy to show more emotion. Tommy’s emotionless expression in response is about all we need to see that Hughes’ wishes are going to go ungranted. Meanwhile, Tommy’s counterpart tonight is all about the emotion. John, I refuse to call him War Machine, is pissed that Serra is coaching up George during practice when John is the next to fight.

– All I’m really learning about Tommy is that he is a farmboy. I just told you in one sentence what this episode spends about 15 minutes telling you.

– John is, as Matt Serra puts it, a “knucklehead.” John trained with Phil Baroni and has done some work with the Lion’s Den. He’s also a moron that wears faux bullet-laced belts to the airport.

– John lost both his parents when he was younger. His dad died when he was 13. John gets nervous before his fights and believes it has to do with not having a support structure behind him, as that was his Dad’s role. He feels like he has to win because he has nothing or no one to go back to.

– Tommy starts bleeding about ten seconds into the fight. Did he blade or something? John actually gets a takedown to start the fight after a leg kick. I guess the cut came during the takedown skirmish. John takes Tommy’s back and does some good work from there but can’t secure a choke. “HE’S BLEEDING LIKE A PIG!” screams Serra. Tommy reverses position and lands some good punches and forearms from the top. Tommy is dropping elbows now, perhaps trying to even up the cut tally. John looks like he is just trying to finish out the round as he is getting pounded by Tommy.

– Tommy gets a takedown to start the second round and spends a lot of time controlling John on the ground. John tries to get out from time to time but this is mostly just an example of how much stronger Tommy is than John. Tommy wore John down in the first with his wrestling and John doesn’t seem to have much energy left in the second round. Tommy has been trying to get an armlock for much of the round but he’s a wrestler, not a submission guy.

– Everyone waits for the decision and it is not going to a third round. Good news for John because he couldn’t make it to his stool after the second round. Tommy won by unanimous decision but Team Serra wins the first round bouts 6-2, giving Matt Serra control over all the quarterfinal bouts.
