In Hindsight: Kid Nation, Episode 9

Shows

So last episode’s talent show went over pretty well. Kennedy won the gold star (over Divad. Shocking, I know), and noone left. The Green District finally got Upper Class, and we’ll see if their many times as Laborers affects how they act now.

The Green District Star Winners (Sophia, Michael, Morgan and Kennedy (LOL)) have a Gold Star love fest as Laurel notes how many of her team has gotten the stars. Four out of 10… yeah, that’s a pretty good percentage. Everyone thinks that the Greenies are getting a bit too stuck up, which leads to the Town Council going to read the mysterious historical journal, which tells them that perhaps they should switch up the teams to create a little more equality. Everyone but Laurel seems open to the idea.

So we get a town meeting to announce the changes. But instead of a full-on tribeDistrict swap with random buffbandana drawings, Blaine goes from Blue to Yellow, Emilie goes from Red to Blue and Nathan goes from Blue to Red. Laurel declines to participate, which kinda kills the whole thing dead and gets Blue, Yellow and Red mad at their respective leaders. Greg’s pissed at losing his best friend in town to a different district, but really, isn’t this like when Joey moved out and he still hung out with Chandler at Central Perk? Red is a little annoyed that they got Nathan, who is weird. When Jared is telling you that a kid is a bit off, that’s saying something.

Somewhere in all this, I think we see that Hunter is in the running for a Gold Star. Of course, most viewers probably went “Wait… who?” and Laurel does the exposition for us in that he’s buried behind… well just about everyone else on Green because they’re interesting.

Showdown gives us a hauling task where noone hauls their “fair share”, but Green once again underwhelms by hauling less than everyone else. Greg does the lion’s share for Blue in netting them Upper Class status. Greg, actually, bounces between dick and nice guy quite a bit this episode. Blaine, out of Greg’s shadow, shows that he can do the same for Yellow. Red, meanwhile, are real slow to get moving and are the Labourers, and to add insult to injury they only hauled five pounds more than Blue. So noone gets beds.

Polling the kids shows us that either Hunter or Blaine will get the Gold Star. They don’t even bother with the Divad nonsense this week. Anyways, I’d say that Hunter was a lock, except that Laurel’s “we’re so much better than you” attitude likely turned the other Council members towards Blaine.

Town Hall meeting results in Randi leaving. This upsets Taylor, but of course noone cares about that. Blaine gets the Gold Star, but a(n informal) vote of non-confidence results in the town going back to the polls as the Council spots are once again up for grabs, and it looks like they’ll be up for grabs right then and there. The elections break down like this:

Blue: Anjay vs. Greg – Anjay somehow managed to dodge the disinterest campaign waged by Olivia, and I think he’ll stay on again as I can’t see kids actually wanting Greg as a leader.

Green: Laurel vs. Michael – Michael had an unintentionally hilarious crazed look on his face as he DARED go up against Laurel. Michael might end up taking this but it’ll probably be a 4-3 vote.

Red: Guylan hasn’t really done anything as leader, so DK probably wins this one easily.

Yellow: Blaine may be the newest District member, but these group desperately need an older kid to steer them right. Zach tried, but I think an outsider is needed to kick some butts here.

That’s it from me. Danny’s back next week.
