Introduction
November 13, 2004
On this very date, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla held an event called “Free Admission (Just Kidding)â€Â. Two things took place at this event that would change the face of PWG forever. One would be the debut of “Mr. Wrestling†Kevin Steen. The other was quite the opposite. An established wrestler who fought for the position of a main-eventer, Super Dragon would take on Frankie Kazarian for the PWG Heavyweight Title.
The Debut of Kevin Steen: This was a big deal for Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. Here we have a young kid with a great wrestler’s look who has been making a name for himself up in Canada and on the East Coast in Combat Zone Wrestling. Steen walked into PWG on 11/13/04 with one goal, and that was to win. Falling short of a victory to El Generico, his goal was not met. Though it was an impressive debut, it wasn’t good enough for Kevin Steen.
Super Dragon vs. Frankie Kazarian: Frankie Kazarian has been carrying the belt since July in his second PWG Title Reign and has beaten everyone that has crossed his path. At the same time, Super Dragon has been racking up wins left and right in PWG and was long overdue for a PWG Heavyweight Title shot. In what was said to be the best wrestling match of the PWG Title Changes at the time, Super Dragon pulled out the victory and finally found PWG Singles Gold.
Super Dragon has won the coveted PWG Heavyweight Championship. When he won the belt, he looked as if he almost didn’t believe that it was actually happening. That was hands down the highlight of Super Dragon’s PWG Career. He felt like he was on top of the world. Little did he know that he had a target on his back. Everybody’s concentration in the PWG locker room shifted from Kazarian to Super Dragon. The tale that follows is a story full of hate, betrayal and revenge. This is the story of Super Dragon vs. Kevin Steen.
Chapter One: PWG All Nude Revue (Industry, CA 2/12/2005)
Super Dragon © vs. Samoa Joe for the PWG Title
Super Dragon attacks Samoa Joe during introductions. Super Dragon and Samoa Joe exchange forearm strikes and Dragon runs to the ropes. He goes for a running forearm, but Joe trips him up and Dragon lands face first on the mat. Joe beats on Dragon for a bit, unleashing a series of stiff moves. He gives him the face-wash and the running boot, the crowd is really behind Joe. Dragon turns it around with a cart-wheel heel kick and a snap hurricanrana. Joe is on the outside and receives a flipping tope from Dragon. Dragon goes for Psycho Driver 2000, but can’t lift Joe.
Dragon sends Joe to the corner and leaps for a splash, but gets caught and is sent crashing to the mat. Joe answers Dragon’s tope with one of his own, and sends Dragon 5 rows into the crowd. He struggles to get up, and is in the ring by the referee’s 18 Count. Dragon is out on his feet, but won’t let Joe powerbomb him. Joe weakens him with some kicks, gives him a powerbomb into an STF. Dragon won’t submit. Joe lets go of the leg and locks up the arm turning it into a crossface. This enables Dragon to wiggle his way to the ropes for the break. Dragon catches Joe with a forearm, runs against the ropes and is once again cut off by a snap powerslam for the 2 count. Dragon has Joe staggered in the middle of the ring after another forearm, climbs to the top turnbuckle and gives Joe a sickening Rolling Wheel Kick for another 2 count. Super Dragon shows frustration, because no matter what he’s done so far, it hasn’t been able to put Joe away. Dragon climbs to the top again and gives Joe a double stomp to the back for another two count. Dragon puts Joe on the top turnbuckle, and sets up for a Double Underhook Superplex. Joe punches Dragon a couple times, but Dragon answers right back with a series of slaps to the face. Dragon sets up for the Double Underhook Suplex again and this time pulls it off. Joe crashes to the mat, and Dragon crawls on top of Joe. Referee only counts a 2 Count as Joe kicks out again!
Samoa Joe gets up and scoops up Dragon for a Death Valley Driver, and connects. He holds onto the legs and pins him. Dragon kicks out at two and the crowd goes bananas. Joe gets up and you can see a pissed look on his face. The two men are exhausted and are just trying to finish each other off now. Joe slaps and punches Dragon to the corner and goes for a spinning slap. Dragon reverses it with a forearm which dazes Joe. Dragon goes to the second rope and connects a flying forearm. Joe is still up, but falls down after a spinning forearm. Dragon has the advantage now and picks Joe up off the ground. He hooks Joe’s arm and once again attempts Psycho Driver 2000 and connects! Dragon, still feeling the effects from the beating he’s been taking, is on the ground in pain. He can’t get to Joe in time for the pin as Joe rolled all the way out of the ring onto the arena floor.
Super Dragon follows Joe and rolls to the outside. He struggles to lift Joe to his feet and finally does so. It turns out Joe was playing opossum and nails Super Dragon with a series of punches and a spinning backhand slap! They both get up at the 18 Count and Joe tries to crawl in the ring. Super Dragon runs past Joe making him fall off the apron in the process and Super Dragon wins by countout.
Super Dragon beat Samoa Joe by countout. (*** ¾) This was a good big man matchup with a lot of stiff hits. Super Dragon has a style separate from all the other big men in wrestling, as does Joe, and their styles meshed perfectly. The only bad thing was the finish and the fact that both of them got winded pretty early in the match. Nonetheless, edge of the seat stuff.
Post Match: Super Dragon is still on the canvas, trying to gather up energy to get to his feet. Out of nowhere from camera right comes in another Super Dragon wearing red. (The Original Super Dragon was wearing Blue). The Fake Super Dragon blindsides Super Dragon with a kick to the head and a series of stomps. He then takes Super Dragon’s legs, ties them up and gives him a Curb Stomp! The Fake Super Dragon taunts the fans by doing one of Super Dragon’s poses. Disco Machine runs out to the ring and The Fake Super Dragon is sent to the outside and runs to the back. Machine checks on the real Super Dragon who has no idea what just happened. The camera fades.
