BLATT vs. ECW – 01/01/2008

Reviews, Shows, TV Shows

Welcome to the show. We recap the CM Punk vs. MVP match. I missed it, and still haven’t seen it, but the editors at the WWE made it look pretty good. I like the ending, even if it does make CM Punk look a little weak in the process. Chavo in ECW is a nice touch, as it might lend a little of the credibility that Chris Benoit was going to give the program as champion.

DON’T QUESTION THE FIRE THAT BURNS INSIDE!

This week’s fire is heartburn from my New Year’s meals between last night and tonight. I feel like Big Daddy V tonight.

Hey, remember the ECW General Manager? Well, he’s in the ring and he’s here to introduce Chavo Guerrero. Chavo’s decked out a “WARRIOR” poncho. Jim Hellwig likes to sue, and this might be one of those opportunities. Chavo thanks Armando and reminds us about what we just saw. Chavo is here to explain why, he was injured by Rey Jr and while he was home he watched WWE and ECW programming. No wonder why he’s so angry. He’s sick of hearing about “the future of the WWE, CM Punk”. Funny, I didn’t think you could be the future while being a champion in the PRESENT. Punk breaks up the talk-fest.

Punk questions the fire that burns inside of Chavo. Chavo calls Punk a stepping stone for him. In 2008, Chavo’s gonna be a champion again. It’s a statement of fact according to Chavo. Punk says he’s no one’s stepping stone, and he wants to challenge him for the title, he’s right in front of Chavo. Armando finally butts in and says if Chavo wants a title match, he has to win his match later tonight when he fights… CM Punk!

After a recap of the Miz/Morrison vs. Wang Yang/Moore match from two weeks ago, we head to a six person mixed gender tag match. If there was a secondary title floating around in ECW, the eventual breakup feud between the Miz and Juice Morrison would be good for that belt.

Jimmy Wang Yang, Shannon Moore and Kelly Kelly over The Miz, Juice Morrison and Layla by Wang Yang moonsault splash on the Miz

The faces are sporting cowboy hats tonight in solidarity, I think. Kelly and Layla start. Collar and elbow, a knee and a forearm to Kelly. Kelly comes back with a clothesline once gaining her composure and gets a two. TWO! The Miz trips up Kelly from outside the ring and Layla tags in Morrison. The Juice des his best Rick Rude impression and gets a slap to the face. In comes Shannon Moore, who gets little offense before the double team begins on Moore. The heels keep Moore in their corner for some quick tags. Nice slingshot, forearm, springboard legdrop combo on Moore as Morrison slaps on a cobra clutch. Moore powers out, gets a sunset lip for a two before the heels regain control. Moore fights back, but is cut off again with some quick forarms by the Miz. Another tag in the corner and Morrison can only score a two. TWO!

Rear chin lock on Moore, Moore fights out and hits a reverse neck breaker on Morrison and both men are down. Morrison tags in the Miz and Wang Yang finally gets his tag. Yang clears the ring with and hits a rana and spinkick on the Miz followed by a missile drop kick. Yang can only get a two as Morrison breaks up the count. Moore hits a spinning heel kick on the Miz and follows with a plancha out of the ring. Layla tries to hit Yang but gets a big ol’ smooch instead. Kelly comes into the ring and takes down Layla as the Miz has come back. Miz his a kick to Yang’s gut and Yang reverses a turnbuckle shot, hits a moonsault press and scores a three count. That was a good match, quick paced and they got the girl-girl action over quick in the beginning and had a little at the end.

I guess that having a few days off really helps these guys. No wonder so many guys like the TNA schedule.

Tazz is in the ring with Colin Delaney. The match didn’t go as Colin planed, as he lost. He thinks now that he has the first one out of the way, he’s a little more confident tonight. HE reminds me of an early Kidman, but with a little less mass. Tonight, Colin’s gonna fight Big Daddy V.

Big Daddy V over Colin Delaney by elbow drop
Young Colin doesn’t stand much chance. The kid looks like he can take a beating, and take a beating he does. A slap in the corner, getting stod on, getting gorilla pressed and taking a samoan drop. An elbow finishes Colin off.

Mikey Whipwreck v2.0?

Shelton Benjamin over James Curtis with an inverted bulldog
Wow, Shelton gets one of those dating service videos during his entrance. Shelton’s gonna become the gold standard in the WWE. Riiiight. So Shelton’s fighting another no name this week. Not exactly a no name, but certainly someone you don’t expect to win again Shelton Benjamin.

A little background about James Curtis. He’s the guy who tagged with Roadkil in OVW when Roadkill returned. He also tagged with Idol Stevens, being managed by Michele McCool on Smackdown, but when McCool was injured, the team was shelved. He’s also had losses as a red shirt to CM Punk and Kevin Thorn on ECW.

Shelton wins the match with a powerbomb onto the turnbuckle and an inverted bulldog.

Next week, we’ve got a “fifteen minutes of fame” match between the combo of Moore/Wang Yang and the Miz/Mossiron team. I think it’s called an Iron Man match, but a fifteen minute Iron Man match is LAME!

Chavo Guerrero vs. CM Punk
I like this match up. Both men stare down, collar and elbow and neither can get the upper hand. Punk gets and arm drag and another stare down. They circle and another collar and elbow. Punk goes behind and Chavo drags Punk forward, but Punk gets a scissor hold on Chavo’s head. Chavo grabs the bottom rope and we’re staring down again. Another collar and elbow, Chavo steps behind with a hammer lock on Punk. Punk reverses it, and Chavo flips his way out. Chavo lifts Punk, but Punk jumps behind. Chavo charges, but Punk drop toe holds Chavo. Punk gets a few chops, is shipped to the ropes, ducks, blocks an arm drag and gives Chavo one of his own. Punk lifts Chavo and delivers a chop in the corner. Chavo pulls Punk into the corner and delivers some punches. Punk steps out and gives Chavo some of his own medicine. Punk whips Chavo, Chavo reverses, Punk steps through the ropes, delivers a forearm and hits Chavo with a high cross body. We’ve got another stare down as we go to commercial.

Back, Punk has control hitting knees. Punk whips Chavo and hits another knee. Punk throws a few more punches at Chavo before turning around with some forearm shots of his own. Chavo finally starts attacking the knee with some kicks and can only get a one. Chavo continues the punishment with more kicks to the knee and then he stretches the knee out on the mat. Chavo hits a drop kick to the knee and turns Punk around into a variation of the indian death lock. Chavo adds a back bridge to the death lock and then re-applies the death lock pulling Punk’s arm back.Chavo stands up Punk, and Punk hits a belly to back. Chavo hits a chop block once Punk gets to his feet and goes for a cover, but only gets one. Chavo turns over Punk again and hits an elbow on it. Chavo pulls Punk to the ropes and stretches out his knee on it. Chavo kicks at the knee before pulls Punk up again and hits an atoomic drop on the knee. Chavo stretches the knee again as Punk gets crowd support and grabs Chavo with a head scissors and hits a ick to the mid section adn aknee lift before collapsing in pain. Punk keeps throwing his bad leg for kicks to Chavo. Punk whips Chavo and hits a high leg lariat and lands on the knee again. Punk tries for a double underhook but it’s reversed by Chavo, who drives punk into the corner. Chavo hits a European uppercut. He misses in the corner again and Punk hits the rising knee in the corner. Punk hits the bulldog and can only gets a two. TWO!

Chavo rolls up Punk in the Maple Leaf…. I mean single leg Boston crab and Punk gets to the ropes. Chavo kicks the knee again and goes for the three amigos. On the third, Punk floats behind and lifts Chavo up in a reverse suplex and almost hits the GTS, but his knee gives out. Chavo cross bodies Punk against the ropes and we head outside. Neither man can get back into the ring until Punk slides in at nine on one leg.

Smart ending. No way they could ahve given Punk the win with the GTS with the bad leg. Punk’s all smiles and “I’m sorry”s for Chavo as we go to the Twilight Zone. Excellent show, if they keep it up, they have a shot of keeping ECW a decent show.
