Remote Destination – What I Didn’t Get For Christmas

Shows

I thought that I minded my p’s and q’s rather well this year. I was certain that I’d toed the line between “nice” and “naughty” without crossing over into the latter. I swore that jolly ole St. Nick would have rewarded me for my behavior by releasing some shows on DVD that I’ve been craving for.

But clearly I was wrong. When I awoke on 25th and checked my stockings they weren’t full of DVD’s of televison shows that I loved, but rather adult movies. Not that I’m complaining, it’s just not what I asked for.

And really you’ve got no idea how humiliating it is for me, a grown man, so sit on Santa’s lap and ask him for these things. I had to wait in line and pretend that I had an imaginary wife and kids who were shopping and I was holding their place in line. And the looks that I got when I actually sat on his lap. But it’s not like I can buy them for myself; these are DVD’s that Santa’s elves would have to handcraft themselves.

Here’s a list of the shows that I asked Santa for;

Saved – I’m a sucker for flawed romantic characters and this show was full of them. It’s a show about a med school dropout with a gambling problem who works as a paramedic who’s still pining for his college sweetheart. What’s not to love? It was packaged with TNT’s The Closer and I thought it did decently well in terms of ratings.

Again I was wrong. But I’m left with no closure. The first season ended with a car crash cliffhanger. Not only that, but I’ve hear rumors that a second season was actually filmed and will never air. I’d kill to get this show on DVD because I really did enjoy it. It was a favorite of mine. In fact I’m betting if you google me and Saved you’d probably find me praising it.

Andy Barker P.I. – I’m not really one for sitcoms. I usually find them corny and contrived. But this shortlived show blew me away. It was as hilarious as you’d expect from an Andy Richter/Conan O’brien collaboration. A sitcom sending up the TV detective genre is a brilliant idea.

The show had a great cast, an amazing comedy pedigree and didn’t get a really chance to shine. This is a show that was meant for DVD. I’m betting that the commentaries would be sidesplitting, especially if Andy and Conan reunited on them. Yet this show is nowhere to be found on DVD.

The Andy Dick Show – Everyone rags on MTV for not showing any videos. Well let me praise the network for green-lighting this show. The Andy Dick Show has the distinction of carrying on two legacies; it’s pretty much a successor to both The Ben Stiller Show and The State.

I’m a sucker for sketch comedy and I’m a fan of Andy Dick. And I didn’t give this show the attention it deserved when it was on. So why is this show languishing in the “not on DVD” hell like The State rather than flourishing on DVD like The Ben Stiller Show. Way to let me down Santa.

Huff – Ok, so this show is technically on DVD. But only half of it is. The first season is on DVD (and I’ve got it) but the second and possibly superior season isn’t on DVD and that’s a shame.

Huff is an award winning show that was canceled before the final episode aired. And Showtime doesn’t even have the honor to wrap the show DVD wise? What a crock! Who does that? It’s not wonder why everyone associated with the show seems to bear a grudge against Showtime.

Mad Men – I’ll admit that I may be jumping the gun on this show. It was a program from summer ‘07 and AMC just finished rerunning the debut season a couple of weeks ago. So I’m probably asking a lot for it to be on DVD already.

But that doesn’t mean that I can’t clamor for it to be on DVD. Mad Men was one of the highlights of 2007. It was pretty much a flawless show and I was skeptical when it was announced. But I want to watch the first season again, with commentary and behind the scenes stuff. Plus I want to sent it to my mom (show still doesn’t have bloody cable) so that she can know the glory that is Mad Men.

And that is all that I asked Santa for. I could have gone on and asked for Ed and Thief, neither of which are on DVD. But I didn’t I wasn’t greedy. I pretty much stuck to shows lacking singular seasons on DVD. That’s not being selfish. I really want to share the my love of these shows with the people that I care about.

But Santa let me down. Next year I’m going the Hanukkah route.
