The Show

Spongebob Squarepants is a little yellow sponge that lives at the bottom of the sea. He lives in a pineapple house in a city called Bikini Bottom, works as a cook at a fast food joint called the Krusty Krab, and his best friend is a starfish named Patrick. Together they enjoy some great times just running around, catching jellyfish, and not really having a care in the world. The caring can be left up to their friends like Sandy the anal-retentive squirrel and Squidward Tentacles, a stuck-up octopus. That doesn’t stop them though from having fun and somehow always getting into the strangest of situations.

This collection of episodes has some fine examples of just how insane Spongebob and his daily life really are. He gets himself into situations that aren’t nearly as serious as he makes them out to be, but that is what makes them so incredibly hilarious. Seeing him fall in love with a Krabby Patty is just so stupid that you can’t help but laugh as he is making goo-goo eyes at it. You’ll see things like that and shake your head at how dumb they are, but then five seconds later I can guarantee you’ll be cracking up.

Spongebob Squarepants is one of those animated series that can be enjoyed by both children and adults alike. It’s not that there is the random bit of dirty humor or anything, but there are some jokes that kids won’t necessarily get yet adults will. Kids will sit back and laugh at the funny characters and off the wall reactions that come from the characters. Adults will enjoy the totally absurd storylines and subtle humor while still being able to enjoy the same qualities of the show that kids like. It really is a show that can be entertaining for all ages, and this small set of episodes proves that point in a big way.

Episodes

Disc One:

To Love A Patty: Spongebob has always had a place deep in his heart for Krabby Patties, but never like this. He falls in love with one and ends up forgetting about everyone and everything else in his life.

A Flea In Her Dome: Sandy is all about cleanliness; especially considering she is the only resident of Bikini Bottom that isn’t a natural sea-dweller. Spongebob and Patrick decide to throw a “welcome back” party for Sandy after she comes back from a convention but things go a bit haywire when she discovers she has a flea.

Mermaidman Vs. Spongebob: Mr. Krabs has a new promotion featuring the return of Mermaidman and Barnacle Boy. Plankton though has his diabolical mind working and hypnotizes the heroes to put the Krusty Krab out of business. Spongebob knows it is up to him to step up and bring the heroes to their senses.

Le Big Switch: A snobby French chef steps into Spongebob’s place for a while at the Krusty Krab and this could prove useful with his expertise and bring Mr. Krabs some more money that he cherishes. It backfires though when the chef’s snobbiness ends up costing Mr. Krabs money more then making it for him.

The Donut Of Shame: Simple things can sometimes upset a person more then anything else and that happens to Patrick here. After a wild party at Spongebob’s the night before, Patrick wakes up and sees a donut in his friend’s hand that looks mighty tasty. Spongebob is sleeping so he surely won’t miss it so Patrick takes it, but feels extremely guilty long afterwards. This is my favorite episode in this set because it really is just incredibly stupid and funny. The seriousness brought out for no reason at all (taking a donut) just makes it even better.

Blackjack: Spongebob’s bully of a cousin Blackjack is out of prison and on a beeline for Spongebob’s parents. The young porous sponge knows he must do what he can to save mom and dad.

Blackened Sponge: Spongebob’s accidental black-eye doesn’t seem like much until he lies to everyone and says a bad guy outlaw gave it to him. Everyone thinks he is so tough and a hero. That is, until the outlaw actually shows up.

The Video

The episodes are shown in Full Screen format and look very good. The animation is incredibly smooth and all the colors are as bright as can be expected from Bikini Bottom.

The Audio

The episodes are heard in Dolby Digital Stereo Sound and also come through sounding great. Every big of dialogue, every insane song, and every kooky sound effect is heard loud and clear.

Special Features

Original Animatic: “To Love A Patty” – The entire finished episode of “To Love A Patty” is shown very small in the bottom right hand corner while the original black and white early drawings are shown frame by frame bigger in the top left corner.

Karaoke Music Video: “Can’t Keep My Eyes Off Of You” – This is simply Spongebob singing to his Krabby Patty with the words appearing across the bottom of the screen so you can sing along. You can do it either with Spongebob singing or without so you can provide the vocals.

The Inside Pulse

As much as I love Spongebob and the whole crew, this just isn’t worth it. Sure the cartoons are very good and each is funnier then the next, but the value isn’t there. You can pick up one of the complete seasons of Spongebob Squarepants for around thirty bucks (around double the cost of this DVD) and get more then two times the number of episodes along with a ton more special features. I will admit that the episodes included on this DVD are very good ones and some I’ll end up watching over and over again, but you’ve got to simply sit back and look at this from a value standpoint. If you look at it in any other way, then this is a great DVD both you and yours kids would enjoy. But seeing it as something to decide upon when at the store, the value of it is why it ends up with such a low score. Sorry Spongebob, you know I love you man. You too Gary. Meow!
