The Movie

Some German big wigs check out the full moon, grab their weapons and night goggles, and head outside. One of them isn’t too lucky as a hairy beast has torn open his neck, but the rest of the men capture it and stuff it into a crate. Back in the good ol’ US of A, a family-run special effects company is having all sorts of problems getting ready for their biggest event ever. They have to deal with break-ins, robots being smashed by vandals, and one of their crates of fireworks hasn’t even shown up yet. After a phone call to the company, the crate finally arrives but it holds something much more sinister inside, and it’s hungry.

Good sweet God above this film is horrible. Imagine that you are in college and you have a decent sized group of friends. None of you are majoring in film, but one of you happens to have a video camera. You’re bored one night and decide to tape random things around your apartment as your friends drink, play cards, and just act stupid. It’s doubtful I know any of the people who are reading this review, but I would rather watch your tape on repeat for a week then ever watch this film again. Yes, it’s that bad.

The acting is just incredibly bad while the direction is laughable at times. Laughable isn’t even the right word. I think “absurd” is more appropriate. There are cheesy sound effects, comedic noises, and if I’m not mistaken, the script was written by a five day old. It is blatantly obvious that they were going for a horror-comedy here, but really intending the horror portion of it to be scary. My incredible brain makes me think that it takes a lettuce leaf to scare these people if they honestly believe any of this would frighten someone. Keep an eye out for the Microsoft Paint looking graphics about twenty minutes into the film though because they are sweet (large pathetic sigh).

The Video

The film is shown in 1.78:1 Anamorphic Widescreen format and appears to have been filmed totally on handheld cameras. At least that’s the impression I get. Most of it has a yellowish tint to it which I don’t believe was for effect. I’ve seen better quality on YouTube.

The Audio

The film is heard in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and is useless. At times there are random effects coming from around the room, but they are awful sounding. Every single person also sounds like they are talking in a three foot by three foot room thanks to the echo.

Special Features

“Spit You Out” Music Video

“Composing A Monster” Featurette – Christian Devein is the film’s composer and he sits down to answer questions actually written on a piece of paper by the director. It is a really generic eleven minute feature in which he just talks about the music in the film.

Audio Commentary – Directors Gregory C. Parker and Christian Pindar automatically let us know they are the directors, editors, cinematographers, cameramen, and more. First off let me say that is an incredibly lame commentary. It starts off with them saying that the opening scene going from an image of the moon to the map gave the film “an anything goes feel.” What? How? Then they say it was “a Goonies map feeling!” Again, what?

They talk about the budget, the death scenes, the mood of the film, compare it to 24 as well somehow. The best part is that they actually admit the film is totally crappy and it was how they meant to do it and wanted it to be made fun of. Their suggestion is getting some friends, start drinking, watch the film, and make fun of it. I’d rather use the DVD for skeet shooting.
