American Idol has made it clear this week, with stops in Omaha and Miami, that the reason to watch this season, generally speaking, is to see how the judges are. The talent is pretty sparse and maybe when we finally get to Hollywood, I can change my mind about this, but very few of those shown really impress me. After watching this week’s episodes, we’ve learned:

In Omaha…

– Paula surely appeared hungover or out of it in Omaha. That was really the only reason to watch. I laughed the entire hour, but I can’t really blame her, as that was one uninspiring city.

– David Cook wasn’t bad, but again, the real test is how versitle these kids are. You can’t go on this show, mimic one star of your choice and keep sailing right through.

– Angelica Puente was also good, but enough with the Celine Dion clones already!

– Jason Rich had a great voice, but if you’re so nervous that you can’t remember words to a song that you should naturally like, then you can just go ahead and keep your suitcase packed. Simon was in a giving mood, because he was right on in reminding the world that if this had been live TV, the show would have bombed and they would have been left to hold it.

– I’m a fan of jazz type singers, naturally, and Samantha Sidley has the cuteness factor like no other yet this season. Ryan Seacrest was a little too much but there was no denying she was going through.

– “She’ll Take You Down, Part One”: Rachael Wicker advances and can take down most men arm wrestling in her spare time. It’s also fantastic to see someone selected from out of the box for once.

– “She’ll Take You Down, Part Two”: Lady Morgue, maybe TNA will give you a call for a hot second, but the whole thing was pretty scary, and I don’t mean that in an Undertaker kind of way, either.

In Miami…

– Paula’s back with a short dress; she’s feeling festive and was probably just thrilled to be getting out of Nebraska. I’m with you Paula. Pass the screwdriver.

– That girl was 16 who was on that “Juniors” show? Well, (a) She looks older, and (b) she needs to check her attitude. Parents must stop lying to their children and building them up to a point of no return. Sometimes attitudes look very staged on this show, so people can get on TV acting like they are on Jerry Springer, but in this girl’s case, I found it to be very sincere—I don’t even want to see her as a actress, Simon.

– Corliss and Brittany, who sort of reminded me of cute Cabbage Patch Dolls, were good—especially Corliss. She has a great chance of lasting the longest out of most of what I’ve seen, and I’m glad to see someone who doesn’t look like a wafer getting through.

– Ramiele Malubay was also good and a little dynamite package (4’11”), and I’ll cheer for someone with some of my family heritage getting through. Rock on girl with your big voice!
