Serial Watcher – Lost – Episode 4-05

Shows, Top Story

We start this week’s episode of Lost on the island, or actually off it, with Desmond in the helicopter, looking at the picture of him and Penny. Oh Desmond, there’s so much you don’t know. For example, you don’t know (but we do) that the helicopter will not reach the boat.
Sayid has a good instinct 0 the pilot doesn’t even know where they going! Unless “straight towards dark ominous clouds” is where he intended to fly all along.
Sayid’s in another crash? He must be thinking “Yeah, been there, done that”.

Flashback: Desmond seem to be a dreamy soldier that could get the rest of his troupe in trouble. Back in my days, the guys would jump someone like that and beat some sense into him.
HUH??? He dreamt the chopper crash? Did he start getting those visions even before he imploded the hatch?
And he did get his entire troupe in trouble. I wouldn’t wanna be him in the shower the next day.

Back on the island: The chopper still flies into the storm, but suddenly Desmond can’t remember Sayid or what he’s doing there. WTF?
Jack and Juliet are worried for the chopper but the “rescuers” are not. They must know something.
Okay, we’re going into time manipulation zone now? What the hell does Dan mean? I think Matt wrote something about that a while back, I’ll add a link later.
Desmond is now trying to jump from the chopper, which suddenly isn’t in the middle of a storm. Is that storm some sort of wormhole or time tunnel?
Hey! There’s the boat!
Sayid’s arming himself before going off the chopper. Seems like a smart move.
What’s the deal with Desmond’s amnesia? Did the storm cause it?

flashback/Desmond’s troubled mind: And in the middle of the sentence Desmond is back in the army, being flaky, dreamy and disoriented.
Desmond can’t tell what’s real and what’s not. But I can’t tell what’s real either, the island scenes or the army scenes.

On the island/boat: And again Desmond changes location in midsentence. The boat’s crewmen are taking him to the doctor’s office and lock him there.
Damn, another one with the same symptoms is there. I wonder where he is jumping to all the time.
Sayid seems to be on to the time manipulation thing. And he doesn’t trust anyone on the boat. It’s a good thing that they sent him with Desmond.
Hmmmm, Dan seemed to know all along that Desmond might suffer this memory loss.
Wait, it’s not amnesia? Then what the hell is it?
Hold it hold it hold it. That guy locked with Desmond. Wasn’t he with Hurly back at the asylum or am I just confusing him with someone else? It’s so hard to keep track. And what did they just inject him with?
How come almost every new character we see on Lost is creepy? The doctor sure fits that description.

flashback/Desmond’s troubled mind: Desmond picks up precisely at the same second he left, about to call Penny. And she wants nothing to do with him.
Again, is Desmond losing it on the boat or on the army?

On the island/boat: Again with the jumping in midsentence!
Frank and Sayid take over the doctor’s office.
Dan took over Juliet’s old role for me. I don’t know whether to trust him or not. At least now we learn that Desmond thinks it’s 1996.
Okay, I’m no Doc Brown and I know next to nothing about time travel. But sending Desmond to London in his hallucinations? Freaky!

flashback/Desmond’s troubled mind: And now Desmond’s back in the army. I wonder of the writing is still on his hand.
No it’s not. So it’s less freaky.
96Dan looks weird. Damn, Des remembered the numbers? Even I didn’t remember them.
And Eloise is a rat. Is she the only one capable of loving Dan?
So a rat can run through a maze. Big woop. Why are they wasting our time with rats?
Wait, he sent Eloise through time? Did he just send her mind through time? I don’t get it.

On the island/boat: It was just getting interesting in 1996 and we jump again?
The strapped guy in sickbay, George, is the communication’s officer of the boat and he got calls from Penny. Holy shit, so Penny does have something to do with this.

flashback/Desmond’s troubled mind: And we jump again!
So five minutes on the boat equals 75 in 1996.
Is Desmond next on the death list? I wouldn’t really miss him.
Unless his memory of Penny in the future saves him?

On the island/boat: Those jumps are getting more frequent. I don’t know whether this is one of the best episodes ever or one of the most annoying ever.
Who the hell left the sickbay door open? Is this a trap?

flashback/Desmond’s troubled mind: If those jumps are tiring to me, I can’t imaging the toll they’re taking on Desmond.
Penny’s dad! I love him! And he was great on the O.C too.
They seem to focus too much on the paddle number 755. But I don’t make a connection to the original numbers.
We already know he’s evil. I wonder what ulterior motive he has for giving Des Penny’s address.

On the island/boat: Man, I don’t want Des to end up like George.
And now George is out! Where is he travelling to in his mind?
Shit, it looks like Des and George are about to end up like Eloise!
Bye bye George. But who’s gonna use the radio with Sayid?

flashback/Desmond’s troubled mind: Okay, could Penny’s dad have given Des her address instead of phone number because he knows something about those mind-time jumps and doesn’t want him to call her in 2004?
If I were Penny I wouldn’t believe Des. And who’s to say she wouldn’t change her number in 8 years?
79460893. What’s the meaning?

On the island/boat: Now let’s see whether she kept that number or not.

Is that new? He’s seeing her in 1996, but calling her at the same time in 2004. This episode is way complicated for me.

She’s answering in 2004! That phone conversation is one of the most touching scenes ever on Lost. Truly heart warming. And at least Des will not end up like George and Eloise.
And Desmond’s memory is back. Thank god.

“If anything goes wrong, Desmond Hume will be my constant.” That sneaky Dan, he planned this all along!!! What an ending!

SO to answer a question I raised earlier in this review, this is definitely one of the best episodes ever. They haven’t had a bad one this season and I love how Desmond’s episodes always have their own unique structure, more paranormal than other characters’ episodes. Excellent.
Oh, and here’s the link to Matt’s column I mentioned earlier: http://primetimepulse.com/2008/02/20/a-case-of-the-lost-episode-4-3/
