echo1fincov.jpgWriter/Artist: Terry Moore

Welcome to the world of Terry Moore, absolutely the best comic writer you may not have ever heard of. Terry Moore wrote the best love story I’ve ever seen in comics with Strangers in Paradise. With that finally wrapped up, he’s taking on a new creator owned project called Echo. This is the first issue. Let’s see if it holds up to his previous masterpiece.

Well, this is different. Moore has chosen for his new project an almost entirely science fiction premise: government weapon thing goes wrong, hits a normal person. That’s a bit overdone, but okay. How about the characters, always Moore’s strong point? Nope, the only info we get is that our likely protagonist is down on her luck from some answering machine messages. Overall, this is standard set up with standard characters. Not exactly inspiring.

The art is the clean, expressive style fans of Moore have come to expect. It’s about the only safe choice on this book. SciFi fans aren’t neccessarily readers of Moore and so I’m not sure this will reach it’s intended audience. If it does, I’m unsure the unspectacular first issue will get them to come back for more. As is, I’m a big enough Terry Moore fan to keep checking this out, but if you don’t know the writer, just go get the first Strangers Trade instead. I’ll review this again in a few months and see if it finds its way. For now, however, it’s distinctly lacking a hook or unique voice. Both can be added quickly, but since first issue sales tend to be the highest, this won’t likely hook many of those just giving a look.
