The Opening Segment
Scared Straight Predictions

The purpose of the Opening Segment was to dissect a certain aspect of either Pro Wrestling Guerrilla or Chikara. Though the past few weeks, I felt like it was necessary to vent out my love and hate for Ring of Honor in Opening Segment Rant form. With that said, I feel like I need to get back on track and pimp the crap out of Pro Wrestling Guerrilla because they’ve been under the radar recently and have been putting on some rather good shows. Join me as I take a look at each match of tonight’s card in California.

Eddie Kingston vs. Necro Butcher

I would hate to be Eddie Kingston right about now. Last weekend he went up against MIYAWAKI, one of the hardest hitting Japanese Wrestlers to ever step foot in an American Ring. And now he has to step in the ring against one of the most reckless mother trucker this side of the world: Necro Butcher. This feud branched off of Human Tornado and Chris Hero’s feud when Tornado brought in Eddie Kingston and Claudio Castagnoli as his partners and Hero brought in Butcher to make it three on two. Expect King and Butcher to go all around the arena and to shed some blood. I wouldn’t even be surprised if they were to take it outside the arena. But in the end, the final fall will be in the center of the ring. Necro Butcher will outlast Kingston after a short, but hard fought brawl.
Prediction: Necro Butcher will beat Eddie Kingston after a Tiger Driver on a pile of chairs.

Roderick Strong vs. Claudio Castagnoli

Roderick Strong has been playing it as a BIG time babyface here, and with Castagnoli turning his back on longtime friend Chris Hero, you can expect the crowd to be behind Strong all night. Though this isn’t an extension of the Hero feud, Castagnoli can still use this to get some heat from the crowd to carry over into the feud. Roderick Strong will take it to Castagnoli hard with lots of chops and backbreakers. But Castagnoli has the size advantage and will outsmart Strong in the long run by being very resourceful (cheating) throughout the match to add another win under his stats.
Prediction: Claudio Castagnoli will beat Roderick Strong after a Ricola Bomb.

Joey Ryan and Scott Lost © vs. The Briscoe Brothers
Joey Ryan and Scott Lost, hands down.
Prediction: Joey Ryan and Scott Lost will beat The Briscoe Brothers after The Briscoe Brothers miss their flight to California.

Human Tornado © vs. Jack Evans

Jack Evans was last seen in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla in a losing effort to take away the PWG World Title from Bryan Danielson. Since then, Jack Evans has been recovering from a broken face at the hands of Human Tornado at WrestleJAM. No, you read it right. A broken face. Human Tornado kicked Jack Evan’s face so hard Evans needed five titanium plates and seventeen metal screws to re-construct his broken face. Jack Evans is now seeking revenge and what better way than to take away Tornado’s new PWG World Title? Despite lots of fantastic flippy moves and a ton of stiff kicks, Evans will walk out the arena the same way he walked in: Angry and without PWG Gold. Not because of Tornado’s doing. Eddie Kingston will somehow play part in this match and cause Evans to lose, setting up Evans to make the teams even with Chris Hero and Necro Butcher. It won’t be long before we see Human Tornado, Eddie Kingston and Claudio Castagnoli vs. Chris Hero, Necro Butcher and Jack Evans. Rather unique matchup, but if anyone can pull it off its Pro Wrestling Guerrilla.
Prediction: Human Tornado will beat Jack Evans due to Eddie Kingston interference.

Independent Wrestling News
Featured This Week: Chikara, PWG and IWA-MS

Chikara News
1. Team Mexico (Lince Dorado, El Pantera and Incognito) won the 2008 King of Trios Tournament. Congratulations to those three men.
2. In a recent interview, Mike Quackenbush stated that there might not be a 2009 King of Trios, mainly because he can’t even imagine the tournament getting any bigger than they did in 2008. Plus the amount of stress that went into this year’s King of Trios was unbelievable, though it was an enjoyable event. He went on to say that even though this is a very special weekend in Chikara history, he can’t wait for it to be over.
3. Glacier!

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla News
1. Scared Straight is tonight!

IWA Mid South News
1. Ricky Reyes and Joker won the IWA-MS Tag Team Titles from The Iron Saints.
2. Michael Elgin outlasted Roderick Strong, Drake Younger and Viking to win the IWA-MS Strong Style Title.
3. Eddie Kingston defeated (2 Cold) Scorpio to retain the IWA-MS Heavyweight Title. After the match, Team BLKOUT came out and beat on Scorpio. Kingston looked up to Scorpio when he was young and actually pushed BLKOUT out of the ring. BLKOUT challenged Kingston, Scorpio and Mickie Knuckles to face them on April 12th.
4. Danny Havoc beat Necro Butcher and Insane Lane to win the IWA-MS Deathmatch Title.

Contest Update…
Last week, I stated the topic for the contest was “Who will be the next Indy Sensation?” After thinking about the question, I came to the sudden realization that the question stated above was extremely bland and had a wide variety of answers. Plus I came up with it on the fly thinking it would be a cool question, yeah I know. Gabe Booking.

So this week, I’m changing the question to “Is the Deathmatch necessary for wrestling?” I have a very strong point of view on this topic which I will discuss on next week’s Opening Segment, but I would like to hear what you guys have to say about it. Check out below for details…

The Question: Are Deathmatches Necessary in Wrestling?
The Deadline: March 28th 2008
The Prize: A Sealed Copy of Best of Chikara (retail) and a Pro Wrestling Guerrilla DVD

Format your response however you like. I’ll post this around on message boards so feel free to respond right then and there, or you can e-mail your answers to jkirschner@4sternstaging.com.
