The Saga Of The Sonics Continues…

First they were sold. Then they were definitely staying. Then they were definitely going.

Now, Microsoft’s CEO (no, not that guy) has put a plan on the table to purchase the Sonics from Clay Bennett and pay for half of the estimated $300 million to renovate and expand the Key Arena.

Of course, the super-shady bait-and-switch to get the team to Oklahoma City seems to have the full backing and support of Darth Stern, so whether or not this goes anywhere is up in the air. Maybe someone out there can explain to me Stern’s insistence on constantly moving teams to smaller markets. The last three major franchise moves (Vancouver to Memphis, Charlotte to New Orleans, and now Seattle to Oklahoma City) have been from larger markets to smaller markets. Calling the Grizzlies’ move to Memphis a “disaster” would be kind. Why they wouldn’t be trying to get Memphis out of that terrible market rather than taking the Sonics is beyond me.
