CPO – St. Patrick at the movies

Features, Top Story

Christmas.

Christmas gets all the movies. St. Patrick’s day. . . not so much.

There aren’t many film’s that we label St. Patrick’s day films. Sure, we have 6 films in the Leprechaun series, but is that really enough? Other than that, what is there? Darby O’Gill and the Little People? Henry Hathaway’s Fourteen Hours takes place during the joliday, and there is a St. Patrick’s day scene in The Fugitive.

I’m drawing a blank on everything else.

Even if we extend it to Irish-ey films, what have we got? Some gangster pictures like The Departed, Miller’s Crossing, and Boondock Saints and Angela’s Ashes.

But maybe we are being too specific with our qualifications for what constitutes a “St. Patrick’s Day” picture. Maybe we should look at films which celebrate the true spirit of St. Patrick: getting drunk and being arrested during the South Side Irish parade. I suppose you could watch Beerfest.

Ostensibly, the celebration is in honor of Patrick, patron saint of Ireland. He is credited with driving all the snakes out of the island. He, of course, did such a good job that there is now no evidence that snakes were ever in Ireland. St. Patrick was sick of those mother-fucking snakes on that mother fucking island.

So maybe SNAKES are the key. To get to Ireland, I would need to take a PLANE.

I think I may have discovered the perfect movie for St. Patrick’s Day.
