More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks – Resolution: Week 49

Columns

A couple of years ago my cousin hooked me up with a mix CD that he had made and Eagles of Death Metal had a few songs on it. I’ll admit to being intrigued by the tracks. I was already curious about the group just because of the Queens of the Stone Age connection, but I wasn’t sure I was taking on any new acts. And then 2006 rolled around.

That’s when Death By Sexy (the album of the week) was released. I picked it up because I’d seen them perform on some show and figured I’d give them a shot. Sadly, that shot never happened because they ended up here in this feature.

Upon giving the album more attention I think that the reason I didn’t connect with it was because way too many songs feature a quick upbeat tempo. I can’t operate on that vibe for too long. I need my down time. I need some chill mixed in to dig it, or else it’s just going to be a tiring listen.

But I can say that I do dig the album. It’s definitely a throwback album in that few “rock” records out now sound like it. It’s got that whole exuberant/fun thing going on, which sadly makes it refreshing. This would be a great album to listen to for a road trip or even a ride down to The Strip (if you’re a Vegas local). It makes me wish I had Guitar Hero so I could pretend to rock out, if that even makes sense.

“Eagles Goth” is probably the song that I liked the most, which makes its two-minute run time kind of suck, because it left me wanting more. The same can be said of “The Ballad of Queen Bee and Baby Duck.”

All in all, Death By Sexy is a fun album, but it’s not recommended for those who like a pinch of somber with their rawk. But I’m glad that I’ve given this album its due, if only because I’ve expanded my mental musical library.
