Serial Watcher – Lost – Episode 4-07

Shows, Top Story

The “previously” takes us both to the boat and to Sun’s pregnancy, reminding us that her baby is Jin’s and that she doesn’t have a long time to live, since women who get pregnant on the island die before the third trimester.

On the boat: Frank visits the still captive Sayid and Des. The woman guarding the door, Regina, is holding her book upside down so she’s either pre-occupied with something else or that she’s illiterate. I don’t know which option is better. Frank warns Sayid against talking to the captain. And I bet Sayid is just going to accept this warning and do nothing.

On the island: Jin wants to talk about baby names but Sun tells him it’s bad luck. I guess n her case it’s better than telling him that it’s a waste of time. He wants a girl, she wants a boy and tells him to put of this discussion until they’re off the island. Unless both of them are part of the Oceanic Six, which isn’t likely, they will never discuss baby names again. I like Jin, he deserves someone better than the cheating Sun.

Flash forward: Sun’s still pregnant and off the island! That’s one big belly. Oh Oh, something wrong, I’m guessing this is the dreaded third trimester?
Wait, both of them are off the island? So the Oceanic Six is made of Jack, Kate, Hurly, Said, Jin and Sun? Or, perhaps the Oceanic Six are only the survivors that made it to America?
Anyway, back to the flash forward as Jin is shopping for a stuffed panda. Isn’t panda a symbol of fertility? He’s on the way to the hospital, so I guess Sun might be going into labor and not that there’s something wrong, like she said.

On the island: Kate and Jack are back. Kate tells Jin and Sun about last week’s events. They all suspect that rescue may be farther than they thought. Took them some time to figure that out.

On the boat: Someone’s slips a note into Sayid’s and Des’s cell, telling them not to trust the captain. See, Sayid is smart and immediately links the note to Ben’s mole. Whose identity, by the way, is still a mystery. Sayid is smart; they need him back on the island.

On the island: Finally Sun’s harda$$esness pays off. She doesn’t wait time and confronts Dan right away about the possibility of a rescue. He tells her, what seems true, that it’s not his call. I like Dan, a lot more than I liked other new characters.
Jack, Jin and Sun are making small talk. Boring.
Not boring any more! Sun wants to go to Locke’s camp. WTF? And she expects Jin to drop everything and go with her. But he has breakfast cereal!
Juliet catches Sun as she’s about to leave and Sun tells her about her plan to join Locke. Turns out Sun doesn’t believe what Juliet said about pregnant women dying. Isn’t it typical? Juliet says one true thing and people don’t’ believe her.

Flash forward: Sun arrives at the hospital and the term Oceanic Six compes up. So are we settled on the Six? Foes this mean that Claire, Locke and Sawyer definitely did not make it off the island?
Back to Sun, the baby is in distress and Sun’s getting medication. Oh, she’s so stoned now. Jin is trying to find a taxi but just as he find one, the phone rings, someone stills his cab (With the panda), and his phone is knocked away from his hand and ran over by someone riding a bike. I can’t believe this is just a coincidence – seems like a plan that fits The Others. Hey, if Ben can send Sayid on killing missions, he can probably mastermind this.
Anyway, Sun is really pissed hunts down another stuffed panda. He looks like he could kill for it, and judging from his past, I wouldn’t rule that option out.

On the island: Kate gives Sun and Jin direction to Locke’s camp. Juliet tries to stop them, until she has not other choice and tells Jin that Sun will die if she stays on the island for three more weeks. This doesn’t help.
Then that bitch Juliet tells Jin about Sun’s affair! She tells him everything!
Good girl Sun. That was one hell of a slap. As much I think that Sun is not good enough for Jin, I like her more than Juliet.
You know? I wonder how Sun really calls Jin. I distinctly here three syllables, but the subtitle only says “Jin”. Is she calling him something like “Jin my love”? Still, Jin can’t bring himself to look at her and for the time being he stays on the beach. He prefers Bernard’s company over Sun’s. Frankly, so would I.
So Jin and Bernard go fishing. Bernard is smart, realizing there’s trouble between Sun and Jin, he tries to talk to him, do a little therapy. He shares the information about Rose’s cancer. And then Bernard becomes Earl Hickey and starts talking about karma, saying they are the good guys. I think just being there with Bernard, even without fully understanding him, helped Jin.

On the boat: The captain has called for Des and Sayid. As they go out to the deck, Regina (remember her), wrapped in steel chains, jumps off the boat. For some reason No one but Des and Sayid seems to care. The captain doesn’t even care, but at least we see him. He goes on to tell them that many of hus crew have suffered some sort of mental problem and he blames the close proximity to the island. Also, there’s a saboteur who messed up the engines so they can’t leave. And even when they do get the engine fixed, rescuing the rest of the lostways is not his priority, he just wants to get the hell out of there.
And the big news? The boat belongs to Charles Whitmore. Yes, the villain that I love so much. Des is shocked. I’m not so much.
And we have a HOLY SH!T moment! The captain has Oceanic 815’s black box! Apparently it was found with the passengers, all 324 of them, at the bottom of the sea. So Charles sent the boat after Ben because he staged the death of the Oceanic passengers – he wants answers from Ben. Good luck man, we all want answers from Ben.

On the island: Juliet apologizes to Sun for outing her, but sais she had no choice. She gives her a detailed description of how she’ll die, week by week, unless she leaves the island. It sounds nasty. Sun seems to take it to heart.

Flash forward: The doctor wants Sun to have a C-section but she refuses because Jin’s not there yet. And there’s not time for surgery as the baby is crowning. So it’s time to push. It’s a baby girl. Jin would be happy, if he ever gets there. Suddenly I get the feeling that perhaps Jin is not really off the island. She’s either hallucinating what happened to him or that perhaps it was some sort of a combination flash forward for Sun and flashback for Jin. I also have a suspicion that the doctor is on Ben’s payroll and may kidnap the baby. But I’m probably just over thinking this.

On the boat: HOLY F*CKING SH!T I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS!!!! It’s Michael! He’s a crewman on the boat!!! But he’s using an alias and pretends not to know Sayid and Des, so they play along. They’re smart.

On the island: Jin made dinner for Sun. He’s such a nice guy, he deserves better. He understands why she cheated on him, he almost blames himself. He agrees to join her on her voyage to Locke, but she doesn’t want to go there anymore. That’s good. Locke and Sun together are too much that not even Hurly and Sawyer could have balanced them at the camp.
Finally he remembers to ask whether the baby is even his and she swears it is. He promises she will never lose him. Somehow, I doubt he’ll keep this promise, even during this episode.

Flash forward: Jin makes it to the hospital. Damn it, I WAS RIGHT!!! He’s not going to visit Sun. He’s on a mission and the woman he’s visiting had a boy. He’s still working for Sun’s father, so it’s the first ever flashback/forward combination! And we get the time – it’s only two months into their marriage.
Okay, since I promised, when I started writing this type of recaps, that there will be no going back and editing, I won’t do that. But imagine that all the paragraphs relating to Jin are titled “flashback” rather than “flash forward”.

Flash forward: This is a real flash forward as Hurly(!) visits Sun and the baby. Hurly is wearing a suit. Hurly says the baby looks just like Jin and as Sun holds back a tear, so do I. Together they go to visit Jin’s gravesite. (I just noticed that Hurly is a redhead, but that’s irrelevant) She named the baby Ji Yeon, just like Jin wanted. The end.

The timeline for this episode’s flash forward is pretty clear – it takes place approximately 7 months after the events on the island and Hurly is calm and collected, so it’s before his meltdown. The Jin and Sun flashback/forward combination was brilliantly written, even though I caught on to it before the big reveal. So far we have five of the Oceanic Six (Disregarding Aaron and Ben). One spot is left and I bet on either Sawyer or Michael, who made his comeback. Next week is the last of the original 8 episodes that were planned for this season during the WGA strike, and on the official Lost podcast they promised to reveal all the Oceanic Six by that episode, so we’ll get at least one answer next week. But I guess how many new questions will rise.
