Ultimate Marvel Hanbook #231

Archive, Columns

Hey all and welcome to another Marvel handbook. I‘m a bit late here so don‘t mind me. Hey Daron what‘s up bud?

Not much, was wondering if you were dead…other than that though, not much.

I‘m good. Running a bit late but I‘m here so no biggie. Plus I should have another issue up in no time in fact. So let‘s start.

No time for small talk huh?

Matt emails

Hey,

I got a question reference an old crossover series and whether you might be able to confirm whether or not it is available.

I am talking the Rise of the Midnight Sons…

WOOHHOO vampires and demons baby.

Anyways do you know if this series continued on into other crossovers or is the one RotMS one basically the whole story?

Allow me to help. Rise of the Midnight Sons (back in the 90s of course) consisted of the “horror” characters like Ghost Rider, Morbius, The Nightstalkers, and the Darkhold Redeemers at first. Starting the titles Morbius, Nightstalkers and Darkhold out of it. The group would face Lilith and her Lilin.

The team would continue into their series and the line would expand as well. The team as well. Doctor Strange’s title joined the line with Doctor Strange and his counterpart Strange joined the team. Other characters like Werewolf by Night and Vengeance would also join the group. The group would be involved in other crossovers as well in Midnight Massacre and Siege of Darkness.

Cory emails

Sup fellas…Cory’s here…here goes all!

Hey Cory. Good to see you bud. This should be fun as always.

1- Top 10 smelliest? I agree with D-Man. Technically since Namor is 1/2 & 1/2, he shouldn’t smell as bad right? Also who the hell is Neyaphem? Also, since Nightcrawler teleports through the Darkforce dimension, why is he not included? I recall it smelling really bad, and the fact that he is furry…the smell may linger. Right?

Neyaphem is Nightcrawler and his family. IE: Azazel, Nightcrawler, Abyss, Kiwi Black, Yidrazil, Jillian, Ginniyeh, Ophis.

Easy to list them all since they all have the fur and the brimstone factor.

2- I must say GREAT explanation on the speedsters vs. teleporters question guys. Basically it breaks down to thought over sight. Thanks.

No problem.

Oh, sure, take all the credit. Didn’t I completely cover your ass on that one?

3- During Acts of Vengeance, it was said that the villains attacked heroes they didn’t usually fight? Care to give any examples?

Sure easy enough:

Spider-Man for instance faced: Graviton, Magneto, Sebastian Shaw, Goliath, Trapster, Titania, Brothers Grimm, T.E.S.S.-One, Dragon Man and the Tri-Sentinel.

The Avengers faced Freedom Force, The U-Foes, Awesome Android and Mole Man. Also of course there was a major breakout at the Vault which Hawkeye and Iron Man had to deal with Wizard, Klaw, Titania, Hydro-Man, Griffin, Angar the Screamer, Armadillo, Mister Hyde, Scarecrow, Electro, Orka, Whirlwind, Yetrigar, and Cactus.

Cap had to face the Controller.

Iron Man faced Doom.

Moon Knight had his hands full with Killer Shrike and Couchwhip.

Punisher had Doom on his hands as well as Bushwacker who was known more as a Daredevil foe at the time.

The X-Men (even though at the time separate) had Mandarin to deal with.

Wolverine found himself fighting Tiger Shark.

Hulk fought Grey Gargoyle and Freedom Force.

Thor had to fight Juggernaut.

Silver Surfer was annoyed by the Impossible Man.

Strange had the Enchantress on his hands.

The New Mutants had Hela to fight.

Last I’ll mention the FF who had to fight: Constrictor, Beetle, Shocker, Ramrod, Plantman, Quill, Flying Tiger, Vanisher, Thunderball, Eel, Armadillo, Owl, Orka, Man-Ape, Stilt Man, Whirlwind, Baron Brimstone, Super-Adaptoid, Hydroman, and Water Wizard.

4- OMG! How the hell does DD and Wolverine not know who Spidey is? Wolverine is his teammate for (no pun intended) pete’s sake? That is just wrong!

That‘s what everyone is asking Cory. I mean all OMD has done is give the readers more questions

5- Since Wolverine likes redheads & there is such an abundance of them in the MU, what redheads has he not had a relationship with or even met?

I figure you mean female ones so I’ll just list female red heads Wolverine has yet to even meet.

Note this list does not count other time lines.

6- Character makeovers? Hmm, isn’t Cyke going through that makeover since Messiah Complex? He’s unshaved, bold, not telling his woman details (a woman who is a top telepath), no longer following “the dream” and basically ordering hits in X-Force. Go Slim!

Yep he is and we can thank Ed Brubaker for it. Ed is up to his tricks again. Got to love him for trying to make Cyclops interesting. I hope it works.

7- Since the X-Men have ties with the Shi’ar and space altogether, are there any X-men that can survive in outer space?

Other then Wolverine right? Lol.

Well Rachel can with Phoenix powers
Same goes with Phoenix of course
Colossus actually could in armor form. In armor form he does not need to breath
Rogue could if she absorbed the powers from someone who can
Darwin. He can adapt to anything.
Vulcan can.

8- Exactly why did Angel &. Psylocke breakup after the Crimson Dawn resurrection? Was it too different of lifestyles or what?

Both had left the team for a time. In the end when Psylocke rejoined the X-Treme X-Men and flirted with Thunderbird it put strain on the relationship more. Warren saw this and he ended the relationship.

9- In Wolv. #61, exactly what was the deal Wolverine made with Azrael against Phaedra?

He offered to kill Phaedra who Azrael could not kill himself if Azrael would put Wolverine‘s soul back together.

10- At the end of PWJ #15, Rhino asks the Punisher “haven’t you ever made a mistake?”, then the Punisher has a flashback depicting a woman being choked, any idea what that flashback was about?

I don‘t think we know yet. But I think we will find out what it was in an upcoming issue of Punisher War Journal.

11- Days of Future Past had me wondering, is it really possible for characters with healing factors to get gray hair?

I‘d say it‘s possible. After all they still age. I mean what is Wolverine by then over 100 some. You have to think his hair would start going gray at that age.

12- DID I CALL IT?! FINALLY, Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool, and I smell a spin-off. Whether direct-to-video or box-office, I smell a sequel. Actually, Ryan Reynolds played a similar role (minus the ugly appearance & red costume) in Blade 3. So what do you guys think of the casting for Wolverine? I can’t wait to see the tension and turmoil on screen between him and Creed.I also heard of the possibility of a Gambit spinoff, eh Daron?

BTW I love they got Ryan Reynolds on board this movie as Deadpool. Gives them options for the Deadpool movie and of course Ryan playing the part. Go Deadpool

My apathy is staggering…

13- Also, what do you guys think of minor changes done to comic book movies, especially Marvel ones? Ex. Iron Man in Afghanistan over Vietnam, Kingpin being black, Gambit being a part of the origin of Wolverine. If done correct, can these changes be acceptable in comic fandom?

Sure they can. I mean look at the movies done already. There‘s changes to origins and the like done. Spider-Man with the organic webbing (though fans complained at first they understood it in the end) Stick didn‘t train Daredevil as far as we saw in his movie. Heck Elektra and Matt didn‘t meet in college either. No Gamma bomb in Hulk (BTW from the looks of it the new version might be using the Incredible Hulk show origin maybe if the previews are right. FF got powers with Doom. I know fans complained but they still enjoyed these movies and went to sequals.

Yeah, I don’t mind them making changes to the origins. Most of them have to be update to be made relevant for the modern media age. For example, Stark would be A LOT older if his origin was still connected to Vietnam in the movie. As long as the character remains basically the same it doesn’t bother me.

14- Since the new Avengers lost Spider-Woman, I say that they need a replacement. Thor…anyone?. Since she helped the team out recently, why not Tigra? One female hero for another. Why not since the team is all street-based heroes anyway? Call it wishful thinking, but I also think that Carmen Electra could make a great Tigra in a movie.

I‘m not sure if the team will get a replacement right away. Why? Secret Invasion. I believe they haven‘t replaced her for that reason. I think you‘ll see two new Avengers teams all together or maybe even 1 in the end after Secret Invasion.

15- So are you gys telling me that after all the times theat the X-Mansion has been destroyed, that Magneto or Apocalypse haven’t destroyed it?

Neither one of them took the mansion out. There may have been minor damage by Magneto or Apocalypse in a fight but nothing that would be considered extreme.

16- Since Bishop is without and arm now and from the future, doesn’t it seem like he may be looking like Cable pretty soon? Metallic arm and all.

Most likely yep. He looked pretty cool with the metal arm in Cable #1. Heck we will see how he got it. (Forge anyone) In the next issue.

17- Has any of the characters from the show Mutant X ever made it to the 616-Universe, or been included in any of the books?

None that I can recall at least. I‘m a bit surprised but not totally. Marvel likely doesn‘t own the rights to use any of the characters.

Well that’s it for me this week. Thanks a mil, see ya in 7, and make mine Marvel. Take care guys.

See you next time Cory.

Hasta.
