Guerrilla Chikarticles: A Recap of All Things Indy

Join me as I discuss what seperates PWG from ROH in my Opening Segment. Plus, PWG “It’s a Gift… AND A CURSE” predictions.

Opening Segment…
Add Yet Another Alternative to Ring of Honor…

For years, independent wrestling has essentially revolved around Ring of Honor and the talent that walks in and walks out. Ring of Honor is responsible for making names like Bryan Danielson, Samoa Joe and AJ Styles worldwide phenomenon. While it is a good thing that happened, it is somewhat also a bag thing. In a sense, it put hundreds of other independent wrestling companies in Ring of Honor’s shadow because names like Danielson’s and Joe’s were automatically pieced together with Ring of Honor. Pro Wrestling Guerrilla would use Samoa Joe, BJ Whitmer, Adam Pearce, CM Punk, Christopher Daniels, The Havana Pitbulls, Homicide, Bryan Danielson, just a bunch of guys an indy fan would automatically label a “Ring of Honor Original”. And even though they weren’t, federations like Pro Wrestling Guerrilla would be referred to as a “Second Rate ROH”.

Then, out of nowhere came Chikara. The TRUE alternative to anything that had to do with Ring of Honor. It had guys in ice cream attire wrestle evil insects who threatened to take over the world, all while putting on perfectly acceptable wrestling matches. Then you had your guys like Mike Quackenbush, Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli who were essentially the heart and soul of Chikara at the time of their rise of popularity. It was only a matter of time before Chikara and their Wrestle Factory revolutionized today’s independent wrestling scene and brought in guys like Jigsaw, Gran Akuma, Hallowicked, Chris Hero, Claudio Castagnoli and Mike Quackenbush, not only into Ring of Honor but also into other wrestling promotions like IWA-MS and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla.

I recently put two and two together and realized that it’s only a matter of time before Pro Wrestling Guerrilla revolutionizes who exactly is the “hot commodity” in wrestling. Just like Chikara had done a couple years back with Jigsaw, Castagnoli and Quackenbush in ROH, PWG is about to bang out some superstars, if you don’t think they haven’t done so already. They stepped away from the cookie cutter independent wrestling mold and got rid of Bryan Danielson as champion. They cut down on using ROH regulars and starting concentrating on making their own stars.

The Current Tag Team Division: Everybody knows Ring of Honor craves on clusterbuck tag team matches and stable wars. And even though they bring in a new tag team every month or so, the tag division gets unbearably stale. Pro Wrestling Guerrilla has been recycling TJ Hooker, The Young Bucks, Scorpio Sky/Ronin and Los Luchas for MONTHS now and still have me on the edge of my seat on what’s going to happen next. Sure every now and then they will bring in the Briscoe Brothers, but the fact of the matter is that if PWG can build a tag team division around 8 men and not let it get stale, they’ve got something good going for them.

Kevin Steen and El Generico: These two already shook up Pro Wrestling Guerrilla for years before Ring of Honor even thought of bringing them in to feud with the Briscoe Brothers. PWG built these two men from the ground up in America and made them national stars. In another genius move to set themselves apart from ROH, PWG officials KNEW these two would never win ROH Gold because of their oh-so-confusing booking, so they gave the popular duo PWG Gold once again.

Human Tornado: I said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m not that big on Tornado, but thousands of others are. A couple months ago, if you told me Human Tornado would be headlining events with Chris Hero, Eddie Kingston and Claudio Castagnoli, I’d call balderdash. But with the right booking, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla made the gust of wind into what he is today: The Human Tornado. Give him some time and he’s going to take all of independent wrestling by storm. You bet your butt that pun was intended.

Low Ki: I know, in no way, did PWG make Low-Ki. Ironically enough, if anyone did, it was Ring of Honor or Zero-One Japan. Pro Wrestling Guerrilla set themselves as competitors to Ring of Honor when they brought in the intimidating tiny man to be their World Champion. They knew Ki would likely never show up in Ring of Honor any time soon, and they want to give their fans something that they’ll never forget. So at All Star Weekend 6, Excalibur brought in Low-Ki to face Bryan Danielson for his PWG World Title, a match that will NEVER happen in Ring of Honor. Well, within this decade at least.

It’s promotions like IWA-MS, Chikara and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla that make me a fan of independent wrestling. They aren’t afraid to take risks and make a guy like Joey Ryan or Human Tornado become the faces of their promotions or run a whole federation based around a tag team division like Chikara does. Because in the process, if you break the mold, you are bound to make a name for yourself. Look at Chikara, 2007 was their biggest year yet and it led to Ring of Honor borrowing some of their talent. Eddie Kingston and Human Tornado were causing fans to go crazy in PWG long before they made their way to Ring of Honor. I’m not knocking ROH in any way at all because they are a fantastic promotion. But both you and I know it’s refreshing to see something new in the world of independent wrestling.

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla “It’s a Gift… AND A CURSE” Predictions
Kirschner’s 2008 Prediction Stats: 3 for 4 (Scared Straight Predictions)

Bino Gambino vs. Nemesis
Bino is a mad man and will rip right through Nemesis. And he’ll scare some fans in the process…
BINO GAMBINO

Hello Kitty ® vs. Kuromi ®
This is going to be one of the craziest matches of the year. I’m tellin’ ya. Expect lots of flippy moves, lots of german suplexes and a few submission moves you have yet to see. Hello Kitty will go over with That Japanese Move.
HELLO KITTY ®

Los Luchas vs. MAZADA and NOSAWA
Los Luchas have already landed a spot in DDT4 and if MAZADA and NOSAWA win, they pretty much earn a spot in the tournament as well. I don’t know much about MAZADA and NOSAWA, but I’m picking them to win anyway.
MAZADA and NOSAWA

Ronin and Scorpio Sky vs. TJ Perkins and Hook Bomberry
Basically what happened is Perkins and Hook eliminated any chance Ronin and Sky had of entering the DDT4 Tournament, and with Perkins and Bomberry not getting bids into the tournament either, this fight is more of a battle of revenge. TJ Perkins IS awesome… and his awesomeness surpasses any chance of me picking Ronin and Sky to win this match.
TJ PERKINS AND HOOK BOMBERRY

Brandon Bonham vs. Nick Jackson
Bonham is fresh off a winning streak and while I’m sure Nick can get it done in the ring alone, it just won’t be the same without his brother Matt. They may be successful in tag team competition, but Bonham is not about to let one half of the hottest tag team on the West Coast stop him from being undefeated. That’s right… 2-0 baby.
BRANDON BONHAM

Chris Hero vs. Roderick Strong
This is pretty much a #1 Contender Match for Tornado’s World Title. Chris Hero will give it his all, not only to get a shot at the belt, but to get a shot at the man who has been causing him trouble for the past few months. But Roderick Strong is a huge obstacle. And if Hero can find a detour around Strong, he’s going to find a dead end with all the interference from Kingston and Castagnoli.
RODERICK STRONG

Scott Lost and Joey Ryan vs. Eddie Kingston and Claudio Castagnoli (DDT4 Qualifier Match)
King and Castagnoli’s shenanigans will prevail in this match, no matter how many times Jade Chung interferes.
