Guerrilla Chikarticles: A Recap of Most Things Indy

This week, we have a special Monday edition of the Chikarticles. Inside, you can check out a quick recap of this weekend’s independent wrestling. The topic of this week’s Opening Segment: The PWG World Title Curse. First it was Danielson, then Low-Ki, now Human Tornado. Who is next?

The PWG World Title Debacle: Who’s Next!?

Last week, EA Sports® and the Madden Franchise confirmed that the cover for Madden 2009 (mind you the cover of the game is going to be the ONLY thing different) was going to be a tribute, dedicated to none other than Brett Favre. Of course, this is an extremely generous move from Madden and EA Sports, but one has to think they did this just to avoid another NFL Superstar become a victim to the Madden Cover Curse. So the Madden Cover Curse has been demolished and abolished. Congratulations EA and Madden, you have officially passed the curse off to Pro Wrestling Guerrilla.

The curse of the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Title has been with the belt ever since Bryan Danielson’s latest reign. Bryan Danielson was hit with the curse when Morishima decked him in the left eye at Manhattan Mayhem II. The punch would force Danielson to go for the rest of the match in extreme pain and only half of the vision he’s used to having. The temporary blindness didn’t last for only one night, oh no, it stayed with him for a number of months. The only good thing that came out of that situation was the fact that he got to wear an eye-patch. Danielson was at the top of his game before his left eye got busted. He was on a roll at Ring of Honor beating the likes of Mike Quackenbush and Matt Sydal. In NWA, he battled through a number of other wrestlers to earn a spot in the finals in a match that would crown the new NWA World Champion. And in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, he was set to face Doug Williams in a match that would please technical wrestling fans world-wide. All that was stripped away from him after he was told he couldn’t wrestle due to surgery. He lost the title to Low-Ki in controversial fashion at All Star Weekend 6 in a match that went unannounced until Ki’s entrance.

Low-Ki walked into All Star Weekend 6 with all of the fans on his side, and left with the Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Title. Prestigious? Somewhat, yes. Good luck charm? Not one bit. The title change from Danielson to Ki proved that PWG was trying to offer a true alternative of ROH, giving the fans something they will likely never see in a ROH ring in the near future. Soon, a number of Senshi and ROH Ki followers jumped on the PWG Bandwagon. They might have been pleased with the one defense he had as champion, but I’m sure they didn’t like the fact that he vacated the title himself after sustaining an injury in Pro Wrestling NOAH. The next champion would be determined in a one night tournament at Dia de los Dangerous.

And just last week, we saw Human Tornado fall to the PWG Title Curse. With a dislocated knee cap and a torn ACL, Human Tornado will be sidelined from action for almost a year after surgery. He wasn’t only doing good in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, he just struck a deal with Ring of Honor officials that would see him in the ROH ring more often. It’s a shame… really is.

Low-Ki, Bryan Danielson and Human Tornado were the last three to carry the PWG World Title. All three were sidelined with serious injury while wrestling for other promotions (Low-Ki in NOAH, Danielson in ROH and Tornado in JCW). This goes out to the next PWG Champion, don’t wrestle in any other promotion while you have that belt… or else…
