Box Office Final Numbers: Vegas Beats Speed

News

Not that I really was wanting to see either film, but I still can’t believe this happened in their opening weekend. At least Iron Man was still strong enough to destroy both of them combined.

Final box office numbers showed that 20th Century Fox’s What Happens in Vegas was right in claiming the No. 2 spot at the weekend box office over Warner Bros.’ Speed Racer by an easy margin.

On Sunday, Warners estimated a weekend take of $20.2 million, while Fox estimated an opening haul of $20 million. Fox, as well as other studios, said Warners was being too aggressive in its estimate.

Actual numbers released on Monday showed a gross of $18.6 for Speed Racer, while Vegas grossed $20.2 million, according to Rentrak.

Winning the weekend crown overall was Paramount holdover Iron Man, which grossed $50 million in its second frame for a hefty cume of roughly $177.2 in its first 10 days.

Speed Racer, directed by the Wachowski Brothers and produced by Joel Silver, is a dissapointment for Warners in terms of its opening haul. Kid pic cost well over $100 million to produce.

Vegas, toplining Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher, cost $35 million to produce.
