Brewers extend Braun

The Milwaukee Brewers have announced they have signed LF Ryan Braun to an 8 year, $45MM contract.

The contract will start this season and buy out his first 2 years of free agency.

It’s a bold move, but could payoff in the long run.

Braun, last years NL Rookie of the Year, has started the season slow; many are attributing it to his re-positioning in the outfield. He wouldn’t be the first player to struggle with a position change.

This comes the day after the Rays signed ace Scott Kazmir to a 4 year extension for $28.5MM with an $11MM option. They bought out his first year of free agnecy with the option for his second year.

Kazmir came to the Rays in the deal the Mets want to forget: Kazmir for Victor Zambrano. The extension is much more that he would make on the open market after 2010 – barring an injury.
