Guerrilla Chikarticles: 5 Thoughts on PWG

Columns

10 Thoughts seems to be the theme on Pulse Wrestling this week, so I’m following the crowd! Well, sort of. Five Thoughts on Pro Wrestling Guerrilla!

Opening Segment
5 Thoughts: PWG

1. Roderick Strong has won two annual tournaments in a row (DDT4 2007 and 2008) and is a two time PWG Tag Team Champion. Expect him to play a big part in the company’s future. I’m predicting a PWG World Title run within the next five months.

2. Super Dragon is really just a shell of his former self. His style has changed drastically from a high-flying style to a hard-hitting/brawling style. It’s not a bad thing at all, but it is a bit depressing. I’m just saying, if all you’ve seen of Super Dragon is a tape from XPW or RevPro, you may be a bit let down once you see him now-a-days.

3. Low-Ki should be returning to Pro Wrestling Guerrilla within a couple months. With the PWG World Title out of the picture, I wonder what part he’s going to play in PWG. Whatever the role is, it’s gonna include a lot of kicks.

4. I guess Brandon Bonham is going to be the next big thing in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. With the current undefeated record of 2-0, Bonham faces Davey Richards, his toughest challenge yet. This match could go either way, but I’m calling another win for Bonham. Davey Richards hasn’t been in PWG lately and I can see him willingly doing the job to put Bonham over.

5. Human Tornado has decided to keep the PWG World Title during his leg injury recovery. Even though Tornado was the backbone to the Hero/Tornado feud, they still have something with Hero/Castagnoli or Hero/Kingston. If anyone can pull off a long feud out of their sleeve, it’s Chris Hero.

Chikara Pro News Update (as of 06.03.2008)

All twenty-four men have been announced for June 13th-15th Young Lions Cup cards in Hellertown. Competing for this year’s Young Lions Cup will be Pinkie Sanchez (18), Ethan Page (18), Stupified (19), Shayne Hawke (19), Chip Day (19), Tim Donst (20), James Ross (20), Alex Payne (20), Johnny Gargano (20), Create-A-Wrestler (20), Sami Callihan (20), Kyle Matthews (20), Amasis (20), Ophidian (20), Jimmy Olsen (21), Pelle Primeau (21), Lince Dorado (21), Worker Ant (22), Vin Gerard (22), Drake Younger (23), Marshe Rockett (23), Jason Blade (24), Bobby Dempsey (24) and last but certainly not least, Steven The Turtle Weiner (24)! This year’s Young Lions Cup is shaped up to be one of the most unique and diverse tournaments Chikara has dished out. But if there’s one thing Chikara does right, it’s putting on unique tournaments.

Larry Sweeney and Mitch Ryder have not been on the same page the last couple months. Sweeney hasn’t really been pulling his weight in the Fabulous Three, and on June 13th he will have the chance to redeem himself. Larry Sweeney, Mitch Ryder and Shayne Hawke (The Fabulous Three) will take on Fire Ant, Worker Ant and Soldier Ant (The Colony) at Night One of the Young Lions Cup Tournament.

“YOU GUN’ MAKE ME BUY ME SOME! YOU GUN’ MAKE ME BUY ME SOME! YOU GUN’ MAKE ME BUY ME SOME!!!!” If that sounds familiar, then you probably know the big news. For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, that is the pre-match anthem of Acid Jazz, Willie “Da Bomb” Robinson and Marse Rockett of Da Soul Touchaz. They made their Chikara debut at King of Trios and fans have been asking for a return since then. Marshe Rockett was confirmed earlier on for the Young Lions Cup Tournament, but it came to our surprise when Chikara announced the return of Willie and Acid Jazz! On Night Two of the YLC Tournament, Willie and Acid Jazz will take on Ultramantis Black and Crossbones of the Order of the Neo Solar Temple. At Night Three, they will meet their greatest Chikara Challenge to date when they face Larry Sweeney and Mitch Ryder, The Fabulous Two.

Expect Grit and Glory and Café Culture to come out in a couple weeks at Smart Mark Video.

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla News Update (as of 06.03.2008)

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla returns to Reseda, California with “It’s It, What Is It?” Headlining this card is a PWG World Tag Team Title Match with Jack Evans and Roderick Strong defending their belts against Chris Hero and Necro Butcher. Expect Evans to get his face re-broken by the Butcher.

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla and Big Vision Entertainment will release PWG’s first commercial DVD Release, “PWG Sells Out! (Volume One)”. This 3-Disc set is a must have for any wrestling fan. The match list dates from April 2004 to July 2007. Actually, I won’t even begin to cover the matches. Let’s just say I can’t see how they’re going to do a “PWG Sells Out (Volume Two)”.

The rumored dates for PWG’s “Battle of Los Angeles 2008” will be on August 28th, 29th, and 31st. That’s about it for PWG. Yeah, slow news week for the Guerrilla.
